Guys, I just want to read the darn dissertations, ok? And you know what, I STILL don't know what school those dissertations are from. Mr. Hackworth let us know the various accusations against him (which I didn't mention and really didn't even know or care about), but he still didn't say where his dissertation was from. Is that so much to ask? Mr. Zaruba pointed out that not all dissertations are on UMI. Correct. Mr. Clay pointed out that foreign dissertations are not as well. Correct. And you guys left out the fact that maybe the search engine just didn't find it! Can anyone help me find these dissertations? Yours in the arts, Dakin Burdick burdickd@indiana.edu PS: For those who asked, UMI Dissertation Abstracts describes itself as follows: "With more than 1.6 million entries, the Dissertation Abstracts database is the single, authoritative source for information about doctoral dissertations and master's theses. The database represents the work of authors from over 1,000 graduate schools and universities. We add some 47,000 new dissertations and 12,000 new theses to the database each year. The database includes bibliographic citations for materials ranging from the first U.S. dissertation, accepted in 1861, to those accepted as recently as last semester. Citations for dissertations published from 1980 forward also include 350-word abstracts written by the author. Citations for master's theses from 1988 forward include 150-word abstracts. The full text of more than one million of these titles is available in paper and microform formats. Institutional subscribers to ProQuest Digital Dissertations receive on-line access to the complete file of dissertations in digital format starting with titles published from 1997 forward." ------------------------------ From: JSaportajr@aol.com Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 10:49:07 EST Subject: the_dojang: Re: Hapkido kwans/styles-in terms of movement I do not find the political issues re the various Hapkido organizations personally interesting. But I do find interesting the differences between different Hapkido kwans or styles in terms of differences in style of movement. I have observed different styles among different Hapkido Masters. One master is an unbelievable wizard with joint locks. Another master I know seems to have more linear movements and when he gets a joint lock he abruptly shifts his hips, sort of like using your hips in punching in Taekwondo or Karate and tends to bring his opponents down in an abrupt short arc, using his hips to effect this. Another master I've seemnmoves in wider circles like Aikido. This is most interesting to me. I have come to wonder if the different Hapkido kwans or styles can be identified by characteristic approaches to movement or some such stylistic signature. Can any one speak to this? That is, can you delineate some of the various Hapkido styles or kwans and characterize them in terms of their style or characteristic approaches to movement? Also, what do you think the sources of these differences are? Are they the stamp of an individual Master's style? or are they do to the influence by other martial arts? I belong to an organization which has been aroud for about for about 25 years. My grandmaster took lessons from grandmaster Choi (from Columbus, Ohio) who was a student of Byung Chik Ro. I am a 2nd dan testing for my third in about 2 more years. I have tried some newspaper advertising and have had some response but not to the degree I need. I have been hounded by tv and radio statioins to use their services but find it to be a little expensive for the return I expect. Also, my time away from the dojang is tight. I am employed full time, continuing my education, and just had our first child. Would anyone like to make a comment, advice, criticism? Gawd, I remember that! There is SO much work to be done. Also, thanks for clarifying your intent about asking after the dissertations. As I mentioned a few posts back I bet people will be pretty touchy about having questions asked until there is a trust level built-up that says they won't get their heads handed to them in public. Yeah, I know, we are all MA and should be able to transcend such things. Still I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned how some teachers are out on the floor and teaching by example and other are out teaching by direction. It's a big difference in my book. BTW: My disertation was on "The Illustrated Guide to Design and Development of Latex Sex Toys as Implements of Martial Skill" and is available in plain brown wrapper from an address in Tijuana. Much deep analysis and penetrating insight if I do say so myself :-)! That means a first gup would do all the forms and basics of all previous levels. I can usually structure the entire test in two to three hours. This is a good test of endurance as the seniors get few breaks. That is also how we are tested in the school where I train in Hapkido. My upcoming 3rd gup test will probably be over two hours of reintroducing myself to the mat . In a dan test I can see what I need in two to three hours, but that would include all forms, and looking at all basics in combinations (low block-reverse punch, front kick-round kick, round kick, spin back, etc.). I witnessed a wonderful woman test for E dan at 67 years old. She didn't get anymore rest time than anyone else, and broke all her boards (yes the kicks were knee level, but she kicked through two boards). I have personally had one 50 year old student make it to Black belt, at time in class he would "pace himeself," but on his Dan exam, he kept pace with everyone else... I'm sure everyone is doing what works for them. Yours in Jung Do, Charles Richards Moja Kwan TSD __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Just curious." I think, in the past, all male black belt groups were called "Dojangs." ;) My Sabumnim (a woman) was trained in a school that was almost exclusively male. I hope that's now a thing of the past. Seriously, though, it's not like these black belt get-togethers are a formal seminar or classroom (though plenty of learning and sweating takes place). At the very least, they are an opportunity to train with people who are about your own size and who may have similar experiences being a female martial artist...or not. One of the things I like best is that I'm sometimes considered "tall." I still enjoy training with men and boys (among other things, I think it develops my skills to spar or practice self-defense against heavier, larger or stronger people). We have men (usually young ones) who come to our dojang, see that the instructor is female, and walk away. I'm curious how many of the folks out there in DD-Land regularly or occasionally train with female instructors? To Richard Hackworth: Didn't you just go through this on another subject? Why respond with vitriol when none was called for? Doesn't sound like you're using the sense of humor you talk about. Why not just say 'It doesn't show up because I got it at X university', or 'It should be there, I got my Ph.D at X university at Y date', my dissertation is available at Z.' How much effort does that take versus all the name dropping and attacks?
