Is it for female camaraderie or ? As a BB female, I prefer to work with male partners for my own training, as their size and strength is what I am more likely to face in self-defense than a female's." --DS Ms. DS, My reasons for attending all-female BB training sessions is not just for the camaraderie. But I'm also not laboring under the impression that training with smaller people is helpful for my self-defense (or sparring) technique. As I mentioned in a previous post, I enjoy training with men and boys for the same reasons you state above. Once a month workouts with an all-female group hardly negates the training I do in a mixed-gender dojang. But it does provide me with an opportunity to train in a small group with some fabulous martial artists of varying backgrounds (something that, I'll agree, could be accomplished in a mixed-gender group, too). I am always enthusiastic to have new doors opened. This is one fun way to do it. And the camaraderie is great (definitely no small part of why I enjoy the group). The other thing I enjoy and find particularly challenging about this group of BB's is the opportunity to spar against BB's from different styles (Those darn karate people and their close in hand techniques!) I think we tend to become sedate in our comfortable world of tae kwon do or karate, etc. It provides great experience and is one more way I can become a better-trained martial artist. If someone had called me and said "We are getting this group of BB's together (not just women BB's) for mixed training sessions," I would have jumped at the opportunity for all the same reasons. Thanks for your thoughts. Respectfully, Leslie 2nd Dan TKD ------------------------------ From: "Lasich, Mark D." Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2001 15:40:00 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Internal and/or External Power? As a young TSD MDK practitioner, my Sa Bum Nim kept encouraging me to use "huri", or hip action to get more power into each and every technique. While I was not able to train with him as long as I would have liked, the lesson stayed with me. In TKD (ATA), encouraging effective use of the hip seems reserved for Dan level students. As Gup students, the chamber/rechamber concept is a demonstration of "external" power. At the Dan level, the power is developed and delivered through more use of "internal" power, with chambering reduced, or even eliminated for specific techniques. I equate this internal power to huri. Now the questions: 1) At what level is/should 'putting the hip into it' be emphasized? 2) Does this use of huri enter into our recent discussion around the "authority" of a technique? 3) Are there any specific drills to help develop this technique? 4) Does this concept span across the Korean Arts, or is it specific to TSD/TKD? 5) Is this unique to Korean MAs, or do the other arts develop this as well? 6) ??? I have found that in the little I have learned over the years, use of the hip definitely adds to the power, and actually leaves me less tired at the end of a workout since I am not really "muscling" any techniques. Any other thoughts? If you are wondering what I am talking about, of course, pick-up a copy of JAMA. Youalso may want to take a look at a recent article in TKD TIMES by a student of the late TKD Master Han. The article took a look at the biomechanics (theres that word again) for generating power in TKD techniques. Personally I had some issues with some of the conclusions that the author drew, but damn it was nice to read a treatment of MA up from "my GM can beat you GM."< Bruce, I have to agree with you regarding those recent articles and JAMA in general. It's always nice to see articles that are actually trying to help improve people's understanding of the Martial Arts, whether it is in the realm of physical techniques, philosophy, or history. Maybe we don't see more articles like these because most martial artists are just simpletons who can't take the time to think. Or maybe it's because only children under 10 take MA lessons. Or maybe it's because advertisers don't want to pay magazines for running articles that require a reading level above the third grade. Don't get me wrong, I love reading articles and interviews by and about particular GM's and their recollections about training with their own master. But sometimes it's nice to stretch the old brain muscle. Well, until the next issue of "Ninja Magazine."
