Let's assume you're going from a WTF type TKD school to another WTF type school. Obviously, I would not send you to a tournament as my WB student, but as the level you transfered in as. A lot of the rank requirements will be similar, and so you progress would also be a lot quiker than a new white belt. If you left a WTF type school and say transfered to a MDK TKD school, you would truely be learning new material when it came to the forms, although your sparring and basics would be well beyond the average WB. If you left a MDK school and transferred to a Gung Fu or American Free-style martial arts school, almost everything would be new or different. Your three years of physical conditioning and experience may help you advance more quikly in the early phases, but you may have some de-programming to do as you approach BB level. Last scenario, let's assume you fall into the "sampler" class of martial artists, and have done 6 different martial arts in the last 3 years, then I'd say you'd be starting over for yet another time, and would progress at a normal level. On to my school specifically. You are correct, I would award you a 10th Gup White Belt when you decided to enroll. Let's assume you had a year or more of MA experience and could pick up the Ki cho Hyungs in a few months, it is possible that such an experienced student could say skip from 10th gup to 7th gup on the first exam. I know others on the list may have different opinions on skipping gup levels, but I feel with the advanced beginer it is important for the other true beginers to differentiate the rank (and perceived expectations) soon after this wonder white belt joins. Nothing more discouraging to a 40 year old WB than watching a 25 year old roundkicking to the head with good form and balance and wearing a white belt. In general I would have to agree with a previous post from GM West. To earn rank from me in my dojang, I would have to be convinced not only that you knew Pyung Ahn X or whatever, but that you did it the way I/our dojang does and understand and/or can explain why we do things our way. I guess that's a long way of saying progress would not be much quiker in the intermediate to advanced levels. I'm not sure I'd promote somone to BB level in my dojang that I had not known over a number of years. What about training just because you enjoy it, and forget about the color belt or patch you wear? Yes, I've been reading again, so my perspective may be a bit different. Granted one may get bored starting over at white belt, but to think you're above learning anything new from lower rank material is just fooling yourself. Remember your basics? Perhaps learning them again would be refreshing. As far as my reading? Check out Tri Thong Dang's "Beyond the Known" - very, very interesting reading, for me at least. http://www.pasource.com/dojang/bookdetail.asp?bookid=213 Mark Lasich mark.lasich@alcoa.com ------------------------------ From: "jere-hilland" Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 15:56:44 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Self-defense techniques for disable people Donna: In Houston, I had a deaf student in the taekwondo children's class. His dad attended class with him to translate. After about a week he started ignoring his dad as he was 'getting the hang of things'. Within the month, he told his dad not to come to the children's class any more. He wanted to be treated just like the other students even though he could not yet lip read. He just watched what everyone else was doing and did just fine. He stayed with me for 2 years till his dad was transferred. Best of luck to you. Jere R. Hilland www.geocities.com/hapkiyukwonsul PS I had a hapkido student once who was handicapped as he did not have his right arm. I tried to sign him up for the taekwondo class but he insisted he wanted to study hapkido. He also did just fine. He obviously knew his limitation better than I did. ------------------------------ From: Bernard G Redfield Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 16:26:22 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: More on the police thing, geez O.K., I will add more without the " tongue in cheek" I have been yanked out of a car by the police, I have had the opportunity to be at "odds" with the law, and have used the basic rule of just do as you are told be respectful and agreeable, and it will all be sorted out, cooler heads do prevail, I do not believe that line "give respect only if you get it", haha, you should be overflowing with respect towards the officer/s who you are dealing with soon enough even the guy with the "bad day "will see you are not the enemy, remember these men and women have a job to do , and to them at the time you are the reason for the job, and just because you feel put upon is not a reason to be remotely disagreeable, even if you have to take the ride, so what, it will get sorted out. As for the thumping thing too bad, I still think a little thump is fine, not if the guy is cuffed and only cussing, but for the uncuffed resisting arrest , mouth off guy or the interrfering with police doing the job guy. well there you have it, I am totally pro-cop,maybe even over board, but I feel that they shouldbe able to do the job with out being second guessed by .......thats it I almost went tangent. sorry if my attitude upsets some people, but then I say why is there a waiting line for death row? I would have the scum pronounced guilty taken out behind the courthouse and shot, wait twenty minutes (to be sure)then give the body to the family, but thats me.(no kidding) Bernard ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 14:16:32 PST Subject: Re: the_dojang: DC Hapkido > Rim's Hapkido > 2001 F Commerce Road > Annapolis, MD 21401 > > Master Rim, Jong Bae 7th Dan under Choi, Yong Sool > Master Joe Shaya 6th Dan under Master Rim, Jong Bae Same as in the "Traditional Hapkido" videos? I thought the video listed Master Shaya as an 8th Dan? BTW, I thought the videos were ok, but the way they were advertised I thought that Master Rim would be teaching them. It disappointed me that he was not the primary presenter. We have a student who received his black stripe in ITF TKD when he was younger, and no longer has the belt. He wears a white belt, and after a few months of evaluating his skills, he has been asked to test for Green in May. There was also a student who trained for several years without testing, and he skipped green stripe entirely and tested for green right from yellow. Someone else was a junior black belt at 15 in ATA TKD, and was asked to wear her junior black belt (she started again here five years later) and has worn it for the last year and a half she has been training. On Sunday she will test for first Dan adult black belt. Are you considering changing styles, or just schools? If you are remaining in the same style, you should probably wear your belt. You did, after all, earn the belt, and that is independent of school. - -Leah Makuch lyet143@student.umass.edu www.umtkd.com ------------------------------ From: "Mac" Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 21:31:03 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: Police brutalizing overstepping thier bounds From: Bernard G Redfield <> Oh come on now, even cops need to get their asses kicked every once in a while...
