I found one with Master William Widmeyer, and another with Master John Beluschak. I couldn't find the one with Shihan Gary Alexander. Brought back old memories, that was when I met you too ('98 WKU HOF). One other interesting one we came across I've been looking for, is one with my daughter Elaina in her dobak and myself with President George W. Bush (then Governor). I need to have that one blown up for her. I already had one with Mindy and myself from a year earlier with the President (the one posted on my web site). It was from the "Karate Kids just say NO" anti-drug campaign that the President supported. I'm glad both daughters had the opportunity to meet the big guy from Texas. Another student is on 15 liters of pure O2 and his ton of other problems. He cant even do a technique more than 3 or 4 times before he needs to take a break. This has been a challenging endeavor, but probably one of the most rewarding. As a martial arts instructor, I feel that it is not only my duty, but a matter of honor, to not only help these people in my community but to search them out. If your intent is pure, you will find not only the ways to teach them but also the techniques that will fit into their particular situation. Both of these individuals are training in Combat Hapkido (please lets not get into the Hapkido vs. thing, remember the topic) and I have challenged them both not only physically, but mentally as well. I am very proud to have become a part of their lives. I can tell you from experience that each person will have different limitations that you must adhere to and through creativity you will find the way, there is no one technique that fits all. If you have a specific question, I will do my best to help. They have different criteria for evaluating. We had a few students getting back after a period of inactivity. What has been done is that they started at white belt for a few months until they got evaluated with the school standards and promoted as such. Anyway, the belt you wear does not matter. In the dojang, everyone will know where you stand. I realize that I > will be a white belt again, and I will have to learn the new schools > curiculum. In my school, if you have a grade in Taekwondo (no matter what federation) such a person will keep his/her grade, but his/her next test will be according to OUR curriculum. I have several advanced ITF style students training with us now. One of them is a 1st Dan and others are 1st and 2nd Kup. They are treated exactly like our WTF equivalent grade holders. If there comes a person from other style, s/he may also wear the belt from this style. If the curriculum that this person has learned is somehow similar to what we do, it will be easier for them to test. If the style is fully different (like for example Aikido) it amy take some time, but anyway they will usually move up the ranks much quicker than other students. I have one really experienced white belt... a girl that trained in an ITF styled school for three years but never graded. She was double-promoted during our testing (since this is the only available option in our association) and will probably be double-promoted again soon... In terms of most popular sports in Korea, it's football/soccer and baseball. There are hardly ever any mentions of Taekwondo tournaments (except for the Olympics and major int'l venues). Dr. Un Yong Kim (also head of Korean Amateur Sports and IOC VP) gets a lot more press than Taekwondo the sport. So how is Taekwondo the official martial art/sport of Korea? 1. Children do get exposed to Taekwondo in school, but they don't train everyday, all year round. For that, one goes to a school that specializes in TKD or a dojang. 2. Army (and probably the whole military) train in Taekwondo. They learn the Taegeuk forms and spar. The only difference is that there are no sparring/safety equipment. So for those of you who have an image that Koreans love Taekwondo and play it like baseball. Sorry, but it just ain't true. Perhaps learning them again would be refreshing. >> Mark, You're kidding I hope. A person has been training for several years now, two months from a black belt test, and you are saying he should forget about it and just train for the enjoyment of it and start over somewhere else. The experience usually manifests itself in more rapid advancement through the lower gup ranks, or rapidly assimilating into class at the current belt level. I have found that I see a number of younger people, teenagers through early twenties, come through claiming a lot of experience that does not show up in their abilities and/or attitude. Also, it is sometimes very hard to break old ways or habits and begin to progress again.
