I was watchin' the news on CNN yesterday. Theys were talkin about the China incident where the plane and crew are currently being "detained." As the news reporter was talking I noticed he was on the Mall entrance to the Pentagon with the statute of Forrestal behind him. Everyday at 0610 hours I have to pass that statute and say hi to Forrestal. So as you folks berate me for messin' up the Little Duece Coup stuff, re: Big Slip Daddy vs. Pink Slip Daddy, I was thinking I could be sent to China to fight in another possible war. I could be sent and never come home. The Horror ! The Absolute Horror ! I better go work on my skills and lose a coupla pounds. Cause you never know where another war is gonna break out. Now you understand why I have to hit the bottle now and then. Just another thought to get you away from the Dan Fee controversies ! This is a hard question to answer. I think it depends on how much value do you put in the certification. Some questions to ponder! If the founder of an art has an organization why wouldn't everyone want to be associated with his organization? Why would I want certification A, B, C or D or why not all of them? Is more certification for the the same art better? What is the differance in requirements for different certifications? Is certification A less stringent than certification B? Can I get certified without testing? Would I want to be certified without testing? These are just a few questions I think we all think about even though it is not politically correct to talk about them. Not sure I follow. How is certification being used here? i.e. does different certifications mean certification in different arts/styles/orgs? It seems that we have rank and we have certification (approval to teach). Some arts do both, some do one or the other. > Can I get certified without testing? > > Would I want to be certified without testing? Or more commonly, can you be tested without then getting certified rank? Either way, does it matter if you have learned along the way? Hope all goes well for you. I have seen Bassai written as Palsek. I am trying to remember where. Possibly some of GM R. Chun's shorter books. I assumed it was just a phonic spelling variation. But I don't remember seeing "yonbe". Also, some dojangs use the name Chulgi instead of Naihanji. I remember my first instructor did this. The forms were the same. By the way, seems I remember GM R. Chun at one time said he intended to write another major work on the traditional forms of Tae Kwon Do. That was at least 15 years ago. I have never heard about this work being published. It would be in addition to "Tae Kwon Do" and "Advancing in Tae Kwon Do". Does anyone know whether or not that work was ever published? Danny Dunn <<<<<<<< Arkansas House Bill HB2606, is described as "An act to require martial arts instructors of minor children to obtain a criminal background check; and for other purposes." ...This is an added expense and burden to martial arts instructors. Some questions that come to mind are: 1. How do you define instructor? Does this require that leadership team members must have background checks as well? 2. What incident provoked this and would a background check have prevented it? 3. Why is a such a small industry, the martial arts, being singled out?> As a teacher, I immediately inquired about those clearances (Act 33\34) before I signed my younger brother. I didn't know this man from Adam. Would you feel comfortable leaving your child alone with a complete stranger, Black Belt or not? The instructor, who is now my fiance, listened to my reasoning and sent for the certificate that day. It spoke volumes about his character and his dedication to his students. The fee for these clearances are nominal. Such certificates are only $10.00 each in Pennsylvania. They cover child abuse/sexual misconduct involving a minor and major criminal offenses (Felonies) I personally would not want a person in either category teaching my child (younger brother). You cannot put a price on a parents (or big sisters') peace-of-mind. Oh, and I believe the Martial Arts 'Industry' (as appalling as that title may sound to true Martial Artists) is no longer small... - -Cheree ------------------------------ From: todd miller Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2001 11:35:05 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Florida Hapkido My wife and I are going to be in the Daytona Beach area at the end of the month and I was wondering if any of you are in that area or know of anyone who is. Other than a certificate what do you normally get from you association for your Dan certification fee? I know that with the organization that I belong to black belts receive quarterly newsletters, e-zines, lesson plans and event announcements. Along with the price you need to know what you will be getting for your money. Cost is the amount you must separate with to get what you want. Value is the total benefit of what you receive for it.
