They KNOW the truth and they have independently decided what they are going to tell the public. I personally think if the big names of HKD got together it would help everyone. An organization like the Kidohae would be the perfect way to bring us all together however I dont think it will happen because it appears to me the Kidohae and the Korean Kuk Sool association are sorta the same. When I have thought about this, I envision an organisation like the Kidohae with 2 branches. One straight Hapkido and the other Kuk Sool types. Everyone works together for the good of each other. In the end however we are all students and should concentrate on our training and learn what our instructors have for us to learn. Please don't confuse this with direct advertising, but rather, the methods you use to get your name out there without really expecting anything in return. ie. a local bar sponsering the little league.... What if it is clipped on the outside of the pant but you were a shirt over the pants and you can't see the knife ? Is that a concealed weapon ? Crazy questions but was just wondering as I have never carried a knife on me before and I want to make sure I am not doing it illegally. It has become a part of me now ... I like wearing it and having it with me at all times. It has come in handy numerous times (no, not in self defense). I hold a Kukkiwon 3rd Dan and 1st Dan from Chairman Hwang Duk-Kyu's KOREA HAPKIDO ASSOCIATION. I currently train at THE KOREA HAPKIDO FEDEARATION CHUNDOKWAN CENTRAL HEADQUARTERS. Since I'm a low-level black belt, I cannot investigate many of the issues posted on the digest. If I was a master instructor that would make it easier, but still difficult. Do I support WTF? Well... that's a good question. As you can tell I'm not Dr. Kim's biggest fan. Thank you, ITF member, for your point that WTF also supports Communist countries. Hopefully, the idea is for both WTF and ITF is to admit members regardless of ideology, race, gender, etc. In that case, I'm ambivalent, WTF or ITF, it really doesn't matter to me. (BTW: I find the Gen. Choi's forms more interesting. I learned a few when I first started Taekwondo with Master Howard Lee in the New York area.) Master Sims, I wish I could find out specifically what "government recognized" exactly means, but I don't think my Korean has gotten that far plus I probably would be brow-beatened if I did ask. I did not know there was so much variance in terms of hapkido. I have heard that KHF and IHF look very different. In my view, there are two current problems with the word/art Hapkido. One, there needs to be a uniform set of philosophy, method, and curriculum of techniques so that when one watches hapkido, there's consistency from demonstration to demonstration. The current "solution" is for a governing body to set a curriculum and standards. I think that it is the only possible solution. Two, hapkido is used by Taekwondo people as a generic term for self-defense techniques that incorporates joint-locks. The word lends itself to such usage, but it's wrong. Hapkido is its own art --with its own philosophy, strategy, techniques. The way a hapkido master fights is VERY DIFFERENT than the way a taekwondo master fights. Maybe someone should consider trademarking the name like Hwa Rang Do (TM)? Also, Hapkido grandmasters giving/selling rank away just to add numbers and royalties to an organizations is very, very bad. It cheapens the rank for those who've earned and it only causes more confusion. I have checked out http://www.hwarangdo.com and found the history very good. It even helps me to understand the history of hapkido and kuk-sool better. (Any word about the Hwa Rang Do school in the Yongsan Area? It says Non-Profit Int'l Hapkido Fed and underneath Hapkido.) I like the references to ancient history, but they're probably difficult to prove. Nonetheless, its modern history seems a little less mysterious than the typical Taekwondo, Hapkido, Kuk-sool, (add your own art here) history. As you said, there was a dog factory. These dogs are raised to be eaten. Yes, yes, I know that legend has it that they're eaten for virility and they probably are. I guess when a guy is feeling lucky, he'll eat it. BUT, my instructors at Yonsei University (who are native, by the way), told that in the summer, the weeks tend to go in cycles of 3 days hot, 2 days cool. When working in the hot days in the rice field, farmers got very, very tired so they eat dog soup to get a quick boost. Back in ancient times, before they ever so a cacausian, they never thought of raising a dog as a pet. Actually, they never thought of raising dogs as pets. That habit was picked up from Westerners. If dogs were originally considered pets, do you think Koreans would eat them? Anyway, the point is that eating dog was never considered a macho thing, quite the contrary, it was considered a way to get a needed boost. But come to think of it, one has to "take it with a grain of salt." No offense, but it's published by Dr. Lee and his organization. So if there are any details they don't want to share, whether for good or bad reasons, they can just leave it out. Nonetheless, I found it very informative. Just a word of wisdom, don't be naive, it helps to be a bit skeptical (but not cynical). A hapkido symposium? The only person that I think that can pull this off is Dr. He Young Kimm. He's seems to be the only person that everybody (and I mean all the Korean masters) respect. Also about the question about being government recognized... Bruce, you might consider calling Dr. He Young Kimm. He told me that he is friends with Oh, Se-lim. So, he would probably know or could find out. Jim caught the bug in BIG way, and well, he stuck with it through his illness and received his 4th dan in hapkido a year or two ago [training, I believe, with Masters Weatherly, Allison & West]. Although Jim & I dropped out of touch for many years, I'm glad I had the opportunity to talk with him recently before his passing. Good bye Jim! It's a little background condensed and edited by me to give you a quick picture of the program. It is a window to a great university and an excellent program for those who want to learn the Korean language. I have started the program and so far have been impressed. Keep in mind its not perfect but then again, registration for the class is very simple and your only investment is your time. Read on if interested: "Sogang is a medium-sized university with a student body of 10,000, it is regarded as one of the best universities in Korea. The university has an enrollment of 7,000 undergraduates and 3,000 graduate students in six colleges. From the time Sogang opened its doors on April 18,1960 to its most recent graduation, Over 35,000 students have graduated from the university." "The Center for Korean Studies at Sogang (CKSS) was founded in 1990 and has specialized in developing a course where the learners are challenged from the very beginning to communicate in Korean. Our emphasis has been on developing the learners' communicative competence and we have put a great deal of effort into providing our learners with appropriate teaching materials to support our innovative teaching methods." "Our program is a learner-centered, task-based curriculum that challenges its students to combine thinking and performing so that they understand exactly what they are learning. Also, CKSS focuses on the adult learner. Furthermore, CKSS, in cooperation with the Virtual University located here at Sogang University, has launched the Cyber Korean class on the World Wide Web (http://korean.sogang.ac.kr).
