I have learned a little from books and worked = with some of my martial arts friends (all kenpo). Over all it has been fun BUT now some older friends (not in martial = arts) have asked me about it. I would love to teach them but learning = from a book and learning from a very good instructor are two very = different things. I want to help them but do not want to send anybody = down the wrong road.. I live in the Hopkinton Ma. area. =20 Yours in the martial arts Ralph ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 12:03:41 PDT Subject: the_dojang: patch thanks Thanks to Rudy, Ric, and DS Son for sending in a patch for the_dojang's collection. Both are well worth watching. The material is so well presented that I kept hoping the tapes wouldn't end. The first of slightly less than an hour in length deals with how to stop a short charge, a close right hook, or a head butt = trapping range defenses. While the tape shows 18 techniques, the stress is really on one core strategy with variations and finishes. It defends primarily against short hook punches, close rushes or head butts, clinch range attacks. Versus the short hook Basically a short block open hand deflection block using your close hand from inside to outside that hooks the attacking arm, then bounces or slides into a strike at the side or back of neck, combined with a palm heel strike with the other hand followed by head twist throws that make use of the eye socket for control. This goes to a takedown based on stepping in a circle to maximize the torque on the head, with opponent landing between your legs, double or single dropping knees to the head/neck, and a step away axe kick as a finishing move. There is a set of garment manipulations to choke, blind, off balance, and ground pin the attacker using his shirt which should come in handy in close quarters. Versus Head Butt One of the nice things about the tape is that is works from near clinch or trapping distances and has you fight from the inside between attacker's arms. This is more realistic for a surprise rush. There are many other tapes on the market that show techniques from outside the rush where you are safer and you have more options. This is the harder scenario, and Master Lechuga and Joe Nepo do well in demonstrating defenses against a head butt. There area couple of other techniques shown such as an arm bar to circular throw. The tape is well presented with good explanations and shows the reflex reaction the opponent would most likely have and an appropriate counter to his movement. Each variation is broken down into its component moves and it very specific about how and why to execute the moves. The tape deals with typical reactions including the attacker shooting for a leg. It also shows how to apply techniques to different size and body types. There are close up shots showing exactly how each move is done. There are explanations as to how each move is done and the reasons for that move. Insertions of strikes or kicks are shown as options to the core techniques. There is no bullshit or acrobatic fancy moves. The graphics and production values are good, and Master Lechuga is very comfortable with the camera. Both Master Lechuga and Joe Nepo are effective straight forward teachers.. There is more on the tape than what I have discussed. I intend to watch it several times to pick up. One potential warning that should be given is that the techniques seem to assume a war zone attitude of finishing off the downed opponent. While a finishing axe kick or knee drops to the head may be justified in that type of encounter or some other situations, I would be hesitant to teach them as an automatic progression in any other confrontation due to the liability and potential criminal charges that might spring up post defense. Master Lechuga does mention that it is not always needed. As an aside, the tapes are somewhat over hyped by TRS (who make good stuff, but seem to write promotional copy as if they were selling tapes on late night TV). They would be better advised to tone down the copy and do more talking about the actual content of the tape, which is excellent. Incidentally there are also none of the usual warnings about "not practicing without a qualified instructor", "these techniques are for information only", "TRS does not take responsibility for any injury or death caused by using these techniques". Not that it is my job to avoid liability for TRS, but they really should protect themselves and Master Lechuga with a standard set of warnings. The second tape is very short, like 15 minutes on the clave, which is a 9 inch hardwood stick sold in pairs as percussion instruments used mainly in Latin music. The clave is mounted on a short loop of para cord and used similar to a dan bong for strikes, and pressure point manipulations. Its advantages from my point of view ( 1) easy to carry in a back pocket (2) once accessed it functions as a weapon (3) but in any stop by law enforcement as to "what is this?" it allows you to bang them together, shout "Listen to my music!" or another phrase of your choosing and claim they are just portable musical instruments, (and they do sound good as well, so you can liven up dull parties). (4) Since it is hardwood it provides a better striking surface. The tape shows manipulations with the clave for strikes and how to use the clave in a vibrating pressure point control manner. Tape is very clearly presented and offers some good approaches to controlling an attacker with easy to use techniques. I ordered and got a pair of claves from a musical supply house. They sold for only $5.50 plus shipping. The tape goes very quickly and left me wanting more. More on how to make or modify the clave. This is how to attach the cord which comes out of the center of the stick rather than just being a cord strung through a hole. Even though I have watched this short tape over and over, I can't quite figure out how he did it. More showing access or draw situations using the clave, in close. Clearly if you have time to see the problem developing you can access any weapon or leave, but the tougher problem is how to gain access when being pressured.
