The item sounds very much like the dan bong modified by M Geoff Booth of the Australian Hapkido Group. M Booth has taken the standard dan bong of 12 inches and about 1 inch and diameter and resized it to 10 inches and about 1 & 1/16 inch in dia. The standard dan bong in Yon Mu Kwan has a lanyard through one end of the stick which provides a loop by which to draw the stick, secure it to hand by wrapping the lanyard around the hand once, or use the dan bong as a flail. M Booths' stick has a lanyard of perhaps twice the length which also allows for flailing but with the wrist through the loop rather than only a thumb or finger as with the traditional stick. The longer lanyard makes for an extraordinary wider range of trapping, choking and control techniques and I found the use of the lanyard around the wrist to add confidence to my flailing or fanning techniques. M Booth was kind enough to make a gift of his tape on this modified dan bong and I fully intend to include his item along with the more traditional stick next year when I publish Level 6 of the DOCHANG JOURNAL (2nd BB). I am sure that M Booth has a website and is very approachable in sharing his material. He gave everything he had and a little more. GM Lim will be proud when he watches it on video in a week or so. If it is kicks or punches, straight kicks or circular? I was wondering what DD members think is the top 10 scoring techniques. When you reply please indicate if you are a competitor or referee. If you can't train with him, look for other Hapkido instructors in your area and you may find what you are looking for. TRS sells a video tape with Ray Ellingston, Kelly Worden and Jerry Van Cook that is on defending yourself with a cane. This could be a good source for video learning if you have trouble finding an instructor close by. I'll contribute this (from issue v05.n398 of the_dojang), but would love to hear what others have to say. And also how the %s may differ between KKW and ITF tournys. ................................................................ There is an interesting article in the autumn '98 issue of the WTF Taekwondo quarterly magazine on WTF style-sparring. I'll just quote one portion of it: "A statistical research of final contests of several world championships the folowing law was revealed. Most often, scores are awarded in fighting for application of bandal-chagi (38%), dwit-chagi (29%), nerio-chagi (21%), hurio-chagi (7%), dollio-chagi (5%). Thus, no scores were awarded for thrusts and fist strikes in fighting." ................................................................ Then I mentioned in issue v06.n544, ................................................................ It is very true that at the elite level almost zero points are scored via hand techniques. In the WTF Magazine about a year or so ago they published a study of points by technique, at elite level events. In that study they encountered ZERO points by hand technique. (see issue v05.n398 for details) However, eleven months ago I was at the Pan-Am TKD Champs in Lima, Peru, (just to watch) and actually saw a hand technique score!!! A USA teammate scored with a reverse punch to the center of the hoju and the opponent went down, boom! They were using electronic scoring and nothing was showing!?! Some of the officials that happened to be watching that match quickly interrupted to inquire as to what-the-hell was going on, a point finally showed up on the monitor. ................................................................ If you like information about the Dan Bong with the string I recommend contacting World Hwa Rang Do Association (whrda@hwarangdo.com) where they learned the techniques. >> This is how to attach the cord which comes out of the center of the stick rather than just being a cord strung through a hole. Even though I have watched this short tape over and over, I can't quite figure out how he did it. << I might have misunderstood this, but we normally drill a hole through 'the side'. And you then drill up from the center of the bottom until you have an opening to the first hole. Then you can push the string through.
