There was gold to be had there and we did get some; once again bringing honor and excitement to all Taekwondo athletes. I'm sure you can all remember similar times we spent together training, traveling, competing, and of course, celebrating our victories. Individually, we were a force to be contended with, collectively, we are invincible. I am writing today to encourage you to, once again, to step into the ring and get involved in our sport. As former American Champions, we comprise a most special and elite group of men and women. The honor to represent your country in international competition is a unique privilege. It does not come easily, and once you have achieved this level, you are changed forever. In this new millennium, it is time to be recognized, to stand and be counted and to contribute to the cause that has meant so much to all of us. Last year I had the incredible honor of serving as the US Team Leader for Taekwondo's first appearance as a full medal sport in the Sydney Olympic Games. Needless to say, it was a truly humbling and honoring experience. I was humbled by the distinct honor, and challenged because, once again, I was committed to achieving the highest level of performance and doing my country proud. My experience at the Olympic Games was one of the greatest thrills of my life. You would have been proud to see the Team's unity and their outstanding efforts as they responded to the unique circumstances and pressures of the Olympic Games. I was honored to be a part of such a gifted group of Taekwondo athletes and coaches. After I returned home from the Games, I realized that this was a sensation that all former team members should be able to share. If not as an Olympic Team Official, then as a supporter, mentor, fundraiser, or just as a determined sage like me who would like to share and contribute to our sports history and growth. To this end, I am revitalizing the US National Team Alumni Association and I would like to announce our first meeting to be held in conjunction with this year's National Championships in Cleveland, Ohio, May 24-27. Our meeting will be May 26. Specifics to follow. I hope you will join me in the Pursuit of Excellence! You may contact me by email at jholloway@ustu.org or by phone, 301-585-2272. Choi Hong Hi's memoirs recently. Really interesting to read, especially comparing with other people's opinions about the same event (and I don't say who's right or wrong here, just comparing). But one of the thing that draw my attention is the story about Gen. Choi's talks with North Koreans when they persisted on including the Juche ideology into TKD. The General described how he opposed putting Juche and Kim Il Sung's ideology in his TKD book. Here's a part of the text: " I wonder what made them so competitively try to decorate Taekwon-Do with Ju-Che philosophyor the name of President Kim. Would it have been their loyalty? That could hardly be. I think it was a boot-licking attitude to gain an advantage for their personal success. They wanted to say these words to please the >>great leader<<". Strong words for a person who introduced Juche Tul into Taekwondo... I am looking for "real" Hapkido, not a mix or blend of anything that says "combat" or is meshed in with TKD,, etc.. no offense to anyone, I just want to train a few days with some hard chargers.
