I am not sure if this will answer your questions but I will speak from personal experience. In my bag when I travel to class, teach a seminar, or attend a seminar I carry a white belt, a simple black belt and a black belt which carries three stripes indicating my current rank. On those occasions when I attend a program other than Hapkido I wear the white belt until directed otherwise by the individual giving the program. When I teach a class or seminar I wear the black belt or the belt with my rank. When I attend a Hapkido program I wear my belt with my rank so that my partner and others at the program know at what level we are able to work. I have seen a number of belts replete with names, schools, styles, rank (and if we are lucky all is written correctly in the language of choice). I don't know that any of this does more than serve to "wow" the audience and the un-informed. It has been my experience that the most garish belts and uniforms are often worn by folks who are least often observed out on the mat. On the other hand, as long as I have something to keep my uniform closed I'm not particularly concerned with the color. Interestingly, in Hwa Rang Kumdo, none of the students or instructors wears any rank at all. We are, however, quite knowledgeable of each other's skill and ability making the issue of advertising our rank moot. Best Wishes, Bruce ------------------------------ From: Bruce.Sims@med.va.gov Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 11:13:54 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: RE:" Suffer the Little Children..." or Little Children Suffer Dear Ken: "...A sad but true story. Ran across this article today. Same applies to Korea and Thailand, and so forth..." I wanted to say something slick, funny or clever to relieve some of the tension I felt after reading the article. There was also a part of me that felt angry ( as in "well, why don't they use rubbers or go on the pill. How come the pregnancies in a world with our level of technology?") I know what I am really dealing with is the dis-ease of being the product of a culture that supports this kind of behavior. American culture is based on the belief that our commercial success is mute testimony to our superiority over other cultures. When our young, inebriated military inseminate women of another culture its not as though we are scarring another persons' life, yes? Those dusky skins and epicanthic folds in the eyes along with the knowledge that we don't have to stick around to face the music allow us to do pretty much anything to those bodies and lives that we choose. Do you actually think the US government and the US Military would allow this kind of behavior if they were expected to pick-up the bill afterwards? We Americans have been lauding our arrogance over the world as early as 1830 with the Indian Removal Act and as late now as the salient 6% of the world population that uses 50% of the worlds energy resources. Somehow I don't imagine that the Thai child that is violated by a visiting pedophile from Japan or the US for $500 will stop the world in its tracks. Nor can I imagine that the average Joe slugging down a Bud after work gives a happy gawddamn that US chemical concerns contribute to the glue-sniffing epidemic in South America. I hear daily about how our standard of living is deteriorating and that jobs are going overseas so Mr. Joe Average can't afford to purchase that new Camper from BASS PRO SHOPS. Gee, that's tough. Someone should ask Mr. Joe Average just what it is that the US has done with all its wealth and power since inception that was not at first self-serving, self-aggrandizing, or self-indulgent. Maybe its time to let somebody else have a try at managing this planet for some reason other than serving commerce. Have a Nice Day. :-) Bruce W Sims www.midwesthapkido.com ------------------------------ From: "Rudy Timmerman" Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 18:28:12 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Aid JR West writes: > Special thanx go out to my student, Dr. Dave Collipp who > made the trip with us and was more than happy to offer his medical expertise We would like to add our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Collip. The good Dr. made it possible for her to do just that. Thanks Doc. and the West team. For this reason I am unsubscribing from this address and hope to continue using only my personal e-mail or my website to remain in contact with you all. To this end you could all do me a real service and direct any further correspondence to me at bsime@midwesthapkido.com or through www.midwesthapkido.com rather than my e-mail address at VA.GOV. Ray, it would be of some help if you could check to make sure that in unsubscribing here I don't inadvertently lose touch through my other e-mail address. One after I passed the test and an embroidered belt when I was given my certiifcate. My embroidered belt is in my closet. I wear the simple black belt given to me at test. This belt is important because it was given to me after test. Besides, I believe it to be more aesthetically pleasing. To me, some embroidered belts can be too ostentatious. >> Each time I tested I got a brand new belt (black belt) and had to break a new belt (which I hated). But it was given to me by my instructor so I wore it. When we later split up and I went out and opened my own school ... I got out my original first black belt that I was given and I have been wearing that one for the last 7 years and I love it because it was my first one by this instructor. When my students go for tests ... I give them the option of giving back the old belt so I can put another slash on it (if they prefer slashes on their belts) or I can get them a new belt. Some want slashes on it ... some don't ... but they all want the writing on it. It has our school name on one side and on the other side, their name.
