Please allow me to throw in my 3 cents worth. First of all, like "Dear Abby" says, "no-one can take advantage of you without your permission", and if you find yourself in that position, chances are you allowed it to happen, so I have two types of black belt students at my school. First, there are those that PAY ME for their classes at the same rate as any other student, and by making payment, I treat them as a student, and they can show up whenever the mood hits them, and an overwhelming majority of my dan holders fall into this category. Second, there are those select few that I can call on to teach a particular group of students, and these folks are expected to be at the school at a specific time and do a specific job for me, and these folks I PAY a monthly agreed upon sum of money. Even if I ask one of the second group to show up on any night other than when they are scheduled, they get a bonus on their monthly check. If you are expected to be at the school, teaching nightly for someone other than yourself, and you are not being compensated YOU AE BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF, and don't tell me it's part of your training, because YOU ARE NOT BEING TRAINED. I know of one VERY famous GM who was in the habit of leaving for weeks at a time with the black belt students left to run his school in any way that they saw fit, and I brought it to his attention that NONE of 20 years worth of these dedicated "assistant instructors" were still attending his classes, and several held hard feelings about their martial arts careers turning sour because the joy had been taken out......... I wore the plain belt awarded and tied by my instructor for 8 years from 1st through 3rd dan. I put the monogrammed belt in the closet, except for formal events, exam and closed tournaments. I awarded the monogramed belt to my first student to start with me as a white blet and test to Cho Dan. A good freind of mine came from Romania to the US and trained at our school for about a year and tested for Cho Dan in my former association. When he moved back to Romania, I gave him my "grey" belt as a freindship gesture. About a year ago my freind and "grey belt" returned to the US and he tested for E Dan when I tested for Sah Dan. The simple monogramed belt (devoid of stripes) I now have is still a little stiff for my taste. Maybe in another decade I can get this one broken in, and some good gray sweat lines around my white dobohk tops Yours in Jung Do, Charles Richards Moja Kwan TSD __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I know what I am really dealing with is the dis-ease of being the product of a culture that supports this kind of behavior. American culture is based on the belief that our commercial success is mute testimony to our superiority over other cultures. When our young, inebriated military inseminate women of another culture its not as though we are scarring another persons' life, yes? Those dusky skins and epicanthic folds in the eyes along with the knowledge that we don't have to stick around to face the music allow us to do pretty much anything to those bodies and lives that we choose. Do you actually think the US government and the US Military would allow this kind of behavior if they were expected to pick-up the bill afterwards? Blaming pregnancies associated with military personnel on U.S. culture is simply ridiculous, and reflects a complete lack of historical knowledge. Military (and other foreign) personnel have fraternized with the locals throughout history. Spaniards and Indian women in Mexico, Spaniards and Filipinas in the Philippines, the Norse in Ireland and the rest of (what is now) Great Britain, French trappers in Canada, Swedes in Russia, and countless other such situations have resulted in children throughout the ages. Americans have hardly been the first to be involved in this sort of thing. In addition, the idea that racism is involved is highly questionable. Do you honestly think that American GIs never fathered children in Europe during the World Wars? Attributing such pregnancies to American culture is pure ignorance.
