International Institute, 1080 S. University, Ann Arbor, Michigan For the conference schedule, list of participants, and abstracts of the papers to be presented, go to: http://www.umich.edu/~iinet/ksp/2001-conference/index.html While acknowledging the defensive and democratic aspects of Korean nationalist resistance against Japanese colonial rule, and the violent and unique aspects of Japanese colonialism in Korea, this conference will consider new narrative strategies for writing the histories power and consciousness in Korea during these two tumultuous decades marked by mobilization, collapse of empire, new interventions, and then civil war. By examining the parallels and interaction between Japanese colonialism and Korean nationalism in the 1930s, between Japanese colonialism and post-1945 intervention by Soviet and American forces in Korea, and between colonial modernity and nation-state building efforts in post-1945 Korea, we seek a more critical understanding of the ideology and practice of colonialisms and nationalisms in 20th century East Asia. Dear Marco: ".....Attributing such pregnancies to American culture is pure ignorance..." Right you are, and should you take time to read my post carefully you will note that I do not exclusively hold the American serviceman responsible for standing stud to all illicit pregnancies throughout the world or time. I will, however, agree that there is considerable ignorance involved. It is, in fact, ignorance which allows people in a position of power to allow servicemen given into their charge to conduct themselves in a fashion that produces children denied decent shelter, food, medical attention, parenting and nurturance. It is most certainly ignorance that allows a Thai parent to sell their child into urban prostitution for the equivalent of $1000US which is promptly spent on their opium habit. I t is undoubted ignorance that guarantees that the sex providers throughout the Third World will contract an STD, sepsis or contagion within the first year of plying their trade with little or no hope of having medical attention. It is ignorance that allows the flower of American womanhood to dress and deport themselves in the hopes of comprehending a sexuality or a scale of beauty which resides only in the mind of Madison Avenue marketing specialist. It is ignorance that allows the population of an entire country to be cowed into silence for fear of disturbing the shadow world that lurks in all of our cities; for fear of retribution by criminal elements; for fear of disturbing the status quo; fear of disquieting commerce. It is, by the way, also ignorance which allows you to half-read an intelligent albeit passionate post, interpret only what you wish to, and embarrass yourself on an international Net. My problem, now, is that I have said all that I need to and my post is at an end. My prayer is that your ignorance should be as short-lived. West wrote: << they are actually in charge of their instructors school on a night to night basis, and never receive any compensation, be it financial or otherwise. >> I agree wholeheartedly with your comment about being taken advantage of, but would like to add two possibilities for consideration. First, when my son was coming along at the lower belt levels, he was always expected to teach lower belts for some part of each class. His instructor was always in the class and (although it wasn't obvious) was always monitoring the "teacher." By black belt level, most of this instructor's students were very good at teaching a class at any level, white to black, and were also very good at dealing with the differences in students. Second, perhaps because we always seemed to be in class, my son was utilized by his instructor for almost any fill-in type of situation - he might take over a class for weeks at a time if necessary. He was never given a salary, but he did not have to pay tuition and student fees, etc., any longer. Both of the above situations indicate to me that it's possible to be compensated in other ways than receiving a salary. Sally ------------------------------ From: "T. The video shows the chamber of the arms on different sides of the body whereas the book show both arms chambered on the same side of the body. My Kukkiwon text does not show the chamber position therefore I cannot get an official view of the chamber position from it. Does anyone have an authoritative source (i.e., Kukkiwon source) that shows the chamber position? Does anyone have an authoritative source (i.e., Kukkiwon source) that shows the chamber position? Just checking... Which Kukkiwon text are you using? The 'Kuk-ki Taekwondo Text Book'? Sounds like it. The chamber is more with the waist & shoulders than the arms. In #11 the left arm is a bit in front of the face as your waist & shoulders snap the arms into the block. In #14 the right arm is more in front of the face. There is a twist snapping action to the forearms/wrists as you execute the block. There are video tapes that go with the Kuk-ki Taekwondo Text Book. They help a lot. I passed the cycle test. Then I had to do (for my age group) 30 situps in 2 minutes. I did 90 situps (just to bust some chops). Then I had to do 25 push ups in 2 minutes. I did 50 and had one minute remaining. During my one minute remaining, I pulled out a bottle of crown royale and poured me a sip. Helped me relieve the stress of the test. Here is my question. For a guy who is below 50 but above 45, should I do better. How can I do better. What would be better. By the way, I heard a lotta young studs flunked. Whats up with the X generation. Many thanks.
