The time to teach is only 1 hour maximum..due to the fact that the intermediate/advance class is next after the beginners. With 4 to 5 students I was able to teach and focus on each of them, therefore giving them a good QUALITY lesson. Our beginners classes are from Monday thru Friday and I teach the mondays and wednesdays class. for the last 6 months my class has balloned to almost 30 students and growing each week. I am almost exhausted at the end of the hour due the the fact that I still pay attention to EVERYONE. With short time and this many students how does the experienced instructors in this list handle this ? I see quantity as financialy benificial for the school, but I do not like to sacrifice quality. I love teaching and that's all there is to it. I teach my class as I would teach myself. I tried to encourage my class that the Tuedays, Thursday and Fridays are relatively small class and it would be benificial for them to join because the instructor can pay more attention, but they responded that they like my class better and wishes to stay. Due to my schedule I can only teach Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 7. I thank you all in advance on all your though on this. ------------------------------ From: Jerry Lynde Date: Fri, 04 May 2001 12:31:25 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: Breaking Into The Martial Arts Business This is a joke, right? Thanks! May I also add one other point. "....41. Liability insurance .." I am probably overstating the obvious but Liability is not the same as medical or health insurance which usually needs to be purchased as a separate policy. Liability is what you use when folks sue you for not having a health policy that covers little Rodneys' trip to the hospital ER for x-rays on his skinned knee. Neither kind of insurance is usually required and I recommend that you get insurance only if ----You want to keep everything you own or have ever earned in your life should something nasty happen. :-) Don't leave home without it. Nice job, Richard. Rich. ------------------------------ From: Tkdtiger@aol.com Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 17:26:28 EDT Subject: the_dojang: USTU Certification In a message dated 5/4/01 1:15:30 PM Central Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: > I noticed that, too. I think what they really mean is that is the list of > those that have completed the USTU instructor seminar. Given the roll out > of these new seminars it may just include the grandmasters at this point. > It may not yet include the 4th thru 7th Dans. The reason is that this was offered only to 8th and 9th dans - and as we all know - there are not a lot of non-Korean born 8th and 9th dans. In July, 7th and 8th dans will be able to take the program, and supposedly in August or September there will be one for 4th and 5th dans. you do not have to do the program. Do i agree with this personally - no. I think that the licensing should be open to anyone with a USTU school and the criterion simply something they call can meet - regardless of kukkiwon dan. Do i think it is fair that there are people on that list who will "appear" to be upper eschelon USTU when they haven't even registered their schools in DECADES - no. I think it should be a even playing field. And i know that at least one person will once again jump in with Master H.K. Lee's intent that you had to start somewhere and that somewhere was with a) dan certification and b) 8th and 9th. He will jump in again and tell me again what the intent was. And the intent was good - the execution has created a major backlash which will take the Union a long time to recover from. Reality is that this program has spawned exactly the kinds of responses that are showing up again. reality is that it is confusing school owners who think that their $100 club membership is no good anymore and can't get a $590 license since they are a lower rank. Reality is that although the program is no longer as written when it was sent out a couple months ago - there are only a handful of people who know that too. Those who look at this believe it is the same program which REQUIRES (and Master Lee made a major mistake here - sorry) all school owners below 6th degree to have a supervisor (guess who they are?). It also provides that GRANDMASTERS (gee the same guys on that list) are eligible to be PAID by the USTU for administering the program. Read between the lines folks. Reality is that although the USTU has said - no this is not the program, the re-written version is not out. Again, my PERSONAL opinion of this is that my OFFICIAL opinion is that this could be a good program - but personally I believe that it should be handled like the Bar Association - the school owners have to get so many continuing education credits. Offer continuing education classes in how to run a school - - teach forms, weapons, sparring, legal issues and let them choose which ones they want. When they have 5 credits (at @$100 per course = the same amount of money) they get a license. What I like about my idea versus the one proposed is that it FORCES divergent groups, like the 8th and 9th dans to mingle on an equal level with the 4th and 5th dans. This would be to all our benefits. A related tangent - the reason i believe this would be wonderful for the Union stems from my own personal experiences in Texas. When I started going to the texas tournaments at the behest of Carlos Alvarez, I was wary and they were scared to death. "What is SHE doing here? Why is she coming?" He forgot to mention this to me at the time. I worked my assets to the bone refereeing for them. They appreciated it. Now, they are the nice guys with kids and sisters and they are PEOPLE to me, just as I am a person to them. They know that I have an ex-husband in texas and a cat or two or three and I drive a convertible and that they can call me to referee any of their events. I know that Mr. Jin S. Chong has a beautiful daughter who loves ballet more than tkd and he used to break pump handles instead of boards and it is his hands and feet you see in the original KKW book. When we force the groups to work together, they see each other as individuals versus Masters/Grandmasters/Troublemakers. I know i can call any of them for help. I know when I see grandmaster Won Chik Park he is going to go "Ronda!!!!!!!!" and give me a hug versus a bow. They know I will help them when I can. That interaction has benefited both texas and OKlahoma. That is why the separate seminars will continue to foster the Korean/American friction. That is why I wish it were different. But what do I know? ------------------------------ From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 17:52:37 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: PTs and Private Lessons In a message dated 4/23/2001 6:57:58 AM Pacific Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << And it is not even a suggestion for PTs as we do not deal with "private" parts. >> hi spunky, what about groin and pec pulls? if one was palpating the pectoralis major on a female client.....or a groin pull of a male or female client.... y'never know what one could be accused of. i'd still be careful. and as far as frank is concerned, heck, i'd be videotaping those private lessons. in this litigious society, who's to say whether or not you did something actionable? color me paranoid, but i cant afford to lose my ass-ets over false allegations. let the tape do the talking. melinda Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.cjmas.com Proud Sponsor of the 10th Annual 2001 US Open Taekwondo Championships ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Fri, 04 May 2001 16:32:00 PDT Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V8 #277 ******************************** It's a great day for Taekwondo!
