Is this a way of pushing the student to excell, or prodding them a bit? Incidentally the student in question didn't get any prior warning that this could happen. I'd be interested to hear what you think. (Personally, I think it's rather unfair. But maybe there's a different perspective in which it makes sense). } Donnla, I have had students with learning disabilities, physical handicaps, and extreme busy schedules. At no point would I consider any one of them not worth my time to teach. Each person excels at their own speed and abilities which makes an instructors job quite challangeing and rewarding. Only once have I concidered asking a student to leave and that was due to disrespect to myself and other students. As time went on this student left on his own accord due to being shunned by the other students. If an instructor is only looking for the Gold on the surface he is going to miss out on the Gold Mine found when you dig deeper. Best regards, Kevin M. There seems to be loads of Tae Kwon Do stuff - but none for this illusive art... Oh - plus the videos on offer (£40 or more), from the main site are a bit too expensive for my liking :-0 Cheers. Can you post this for me? Thanks, Gary Pieratt An excellent athlete makes even a mediocre instructor look good and his job so easy. However, the true test of a great instructor is in how he does with the non-athletic student. Obviously this instructor has failed the test miserably. We (instructors) all have students who make our job difficult. Some due to attitude, some due to a lack of coordination, some due to a having a hard time focusing, some due to lack of motivation. Of the four types just mentioned, only a poor attitude should be a reason to dismiss a student. The non-gifted that have a difficult time, but want to learn should be encouraged to continue. It my opinion that the instructor in question (if we have the "whole" story) is lacking a very important ingredient in being a professional martial arts instructor: Patience. I have a young teen ager (age 14) who just now earned his brown belt (3rd gup), after 5 years of training. He tries hard and gets one promotion a year, and this brown belt was probably somewhat of a gift from me for training for the past 14 months since purple belt. He just isn't a top student, but who am I to ask him to leave? Who knows how many lives he may change later in his life with his martial arts training and teachings. In regards to Ken's comments about Billy Blanks: LOL!!! They'll say anything to sell a video. Seriously, I've seen tapes of Billy's fights. Mind you he was a karate point fighter (back when point fighting was the "thing" to do), and a pretty good one. If I recall correctly, he was a member of the Budweiser Karate Team...how many of you "old schoolers" remember that? The guy fought all over the world, and I think he won the "world championship" (I think there were about 100 tournaments with that title) on more than one occasion...maybe 7 or 8 times. I don't think he ever did any full contact. He also had a hilarious appearance on the old Superstars show on NBC...remember the one where athletes from all different sports came out and swam, raced, bowled, and ran the obstacle course? Billy's performance was less than stellar. The guy looked like a wounded hippo trying to run around the track...surprising considering how well built he is. On a scale of 1 to 10...here's how I rate Billy. Point fighter = 8 Martial Artist = 3 Public Speaker = 1 Actor = -5 Business Man = 10 _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ From: DrgnSlyr5@aol.com Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 17:54:41 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: Scouts In a message dated 5/10/2001 1:26:12 PM Pacific Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << Do Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts support grappling/wrestling with a badge? I would like to see a Self-Defense/Personal Safety Badge added for both Boy and Girl Scouts, but until someone has the vision and time to campaign for it..... Some leaders are at least becoming aware of the need for self-defense training at some level, as I have been asked for the last two years to teach at the "Older Girl" Girl Scout Council Retreat for our area. (The noise 60 teenage girls can generate is unbelievable!) We have done merit badge classes for Pioneer Girls, but I know of no other youth organization that recognizes self-defense as a desirable life-skill by including it as a badge requirement.
