To which I reply...exactly WHICH people "like me" are we talking about? Are you referring to: 1. People that are devastatingly handsome. 2. Folks that are brilliantly athletic. 3. Men that aren't afraid to cry. 4. Guys that can't help but point and go "ooooooo", when somebody drops their pants and shows their @$$. I'm thinking number 4, but I could be wrong. I wear a lot of different hats, so you're going to have to be specific if we're going to carry on a meaningful dialogue. In order to make this message relevant to the list (and to keep Ray from banging his head on the keyboard)...here's a question. Who's the greatest martial artist you ever saw, and if you could train with anybody on the planet (living or dead) who would it be (and why)? My answers: 1. Dan Inosanto 2. Jigoro Kano...because the guy was a visionary, a technical innovator, and (most importantly) an educator in the highest sense of the word. Thanks for coming out, folks...I'll be here all week. But I'll be moving to NY in a couple of weeks, and I would like to know if anyone could suggest a good Korean MA school in the Rochester area of NY. Hopefully another Tang Soo Do school" <> Although I lived in NY for a short period as a child, I am quite unfamiliar with the demographics. I do know of a good Tang Soo Do school in Pine Bush, NY. Close enough? I haven't a clue. It is an ITF school (International Tang Soo Do Federation School) chaired by Grand Master Chun Sik Kim, a student of Hwang Ki. The head instructor is Kyo Sa Nim Alan Friedman. We met briefly at a test, but I have never trained with/under him. Many of his students were there to enthusiastically cheer him on at his Sa Bom Nim test. This leads me to believe that he has a strong bond with them. Do you also remember the years when you could eat anything you wanted to and it never stuck? I do. I was good all the way up until 47 and rarely over 155# and then it was like someone threw a light switch. Never in my life would I ahve imagined actually having to fight to keep my weight down. A good Buddhist will aschew animal fats and alcoholic beverages so there is some help there. I lost 7 lbs during my retreat this year on a strictly veggie diet and that was 3 meals a day! Only problem was not straying too far from the plumbing. Veggies have a way of keeping one very loose, if you know what I mean. Of course, Its easy to be a holy man on a mountain, so when I got back to civilization there were the Golden Arches waiting for me. My goal is 170 now and while I don't wear 185 badly I certainly move batter and train better when I am not carrying around the extra. Oh,oh. Gotta run. To improve your self defense chances, as you advance in experience, sparring should reduce in rules. 2. Sparring should include contact (not necessarily knock-outs) and continuous sparring from time to time. 3. When two people spar nobody should get injured. When two people fight somebody will get injured, and likely both people. 4. When sparring, follow all rules so you can have re-usable partners. When fighting the only rule is to preserve life, yours first. 5. In the dojang take every opportunity to spar as many different size, weight, and skill level partners as you can. On the street use all your conflict resolution skills to avoid fighting (see #3). Although my "street-fighting" experience is little to none. My experience with Markland (padded weapons) fighting left me with this typical escalation; Fighters square off using tactics and formulate a strategy to use against a specific advisary. One fighter senses they are at a disadvantage and "goes fluffy." Both fighters abandon skills and revert to going fluffy and survival instincts....When that happens either; superior attitude will prevail superior endurance will prevail superior knowledge will survive or the first to give up will perish IMHO Martial arts training gives us knowledge of possible defensive techniques. Most martial arts and martial sports training improves endurance beyond the average desk jockey. Good martial arts training will develop Jung Do (proper attitude), and "Indominatable Spirit." or the Courage not to be the first to give up. In todays society we train for reasons like; self control, self discipline, self confidence, and self improvement. To gain self defense as a benefit, I would suggest some "realistic" sparring from time to time. Beating the dead horse, Charles R.
