Illona ------------------------------ From: SungPaeKi@aol.com Date: Sat, 26 May 2001 22:49:12 EDT Subject: the_dojang: One step sparring limited I recently worked out with a tae kwon do class. While doing one steps with one of the first degree black belts I did a low controlled round kick to his leg. He looked at me stunned like I had done something wrong, and said "that was interesting." Later on when he punched I did a wrist lock to take him down which surprised him even more. He told me that they weren't aloud to take each other down, which is understandable since we were on a hard floor. During the exercise he would stop constantly after I would punch at him, and said that he could not think of anything to do. I told him that he was a black belt and he shouldn't worry about prearranged one steps just do what flows, and that he knows so many techniques that it should be no problem to come up with several if not limitless combinations. This kind of worried me that a school would produce black belts like this, but I know its no new thing. I also said that if he was to stop after I had punched on the street the! re would be no do-overs. So wha t if you mess up, do something else make it work, don't get frustrated if things don't go the way you want, cause it's never going to happen. IMHO, I think prearranged one and three steps are good for the beginner maybe to green belt but after that I think you should make students try to think for themselves, and figure out the best way to use the techniques that they have learned on there own. You could even change one-steps to include kicks, grabs, whatever. One of my favorite exercises when I teach class is to have students face each other, have one student be the attacker and one defend. The attacker can attack with whatever they want but they can only use one technique to try to surprise the defender. The defender then defends as he/she sees fit with blocks, throws, takedowns and strikes. This exercise really makes you think and lets you study someone else's body before they throw a technique, so you know how to defend better. Hopefully some of you out there will find this interesting. Hopefully some of you are doing this already. GM Kim taught the TangSooDo MooDukKwan classes at the Dragon Dojang near Camp Casey Korea from 1966 to present and taught class at the Camp Casey Gym from 1973 to 1988. Anyone who is a former student of GM Yong Hon Kim can contact him by e-mail at his website: www.koreatangsoodo.com He is planning a visit to the US again this year and is hoping to have another class reunion like he held in Florida in 1994 with over 200 former US Army personel who studied with him in Korea. Date: Sun, 27 May 2001 00:57:41 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Clothes Martial Artist where outside the dojang Hiya, all. I'm just a requiring mind lately. Anyway, I have a question on clothing. Before I started MA, I wore tight jeans, high-top sneakers, baggy shirts, ect. Now, after almost a year in MA, my style changed. I wear loose pants, lighter shoes, and tighter shirts. Maybe without realizing it (till now) that I wanna be able to move if I ever had to use my training to defend myself. My question is, what does everyone else here wear? Being a tom-boy, I'm not worried about high heels and mini skirts, but how would ya "fight" (defend) yourself in them??? Also, I had a friend recently agrue with me about my reason for learning MA. He said, " well if they teach you NOT to fight, then what's the sence of learning to fight?" I used the ol' "To learn self defence", which is true, but not all of it. It's hard to explain to someone who isn't in MA the reasoning behind it. I need a good come-back for him to make him think. I would say "choose with sence and honor" but he wouldn't understand that either. Ok, enough of my rambling lol. Tang Soo!
