You parents who train your kids, or with your kids, how was it that your kids got into TKD ? Did you "talk them into it", or were they spontaneously interested, and why ? Do they understand the concept of self-defense? How about the philosophy? Were they impressed by you, like, "I wanna be a blackbelt like my father!" ? I know I would've been.... but I'm not sure it could've kept me motivated for a long time, once I realised the hard work you have to put in... I'm neither a blackbelt or a father.. but.. who knows what the future has in store.. ? 8-) ------------------------------ From: David Beck Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 09:32:57 -0500 (CDT) Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V8 #317:Daito-Ryu AJJ books The only one I've come across is 'The Hidden Roots of Aikido:Aiki Jujutsu Daitoryu' by Shiro Omiya. It's pretty good; although the pictures are from far enough away it's hard to tell what's going on unless you're already familiar with the technique. This book is pretty new and widely available; I got mine at Barnes & Noble. David N. The best advice has already been listed: Keep the stretching low-key, because the changes in phyisiology will allow pulls, tears and sprains to come on very easily (and won't heal until after the baby is born!). More time warming up, less time stretching for flexibility. and Don't spar. Again, I have heard of women sparring well into their pregnancy, but it just doesn't sound wise to allow a pregnant woman to be punched and kicked. Up till her fourth month we allowed her to spar with blackbelts who could have no contact below the shoulder, and that worked OK (she sure learned to cover her head!), but she said she had a hard time keeping her kicks from flying high on thier own, and her hips were getting sore, so we stopped the sparring. The only other thing I would add is to keep the cardio portion reasonable. The reason is this: the babys heartbeat is about twice that of the mothers, so if the mothers heart rate is 110, the babys is well into the 200's. That in itself isn't a problem, until you take into account the fact that the baby has no way of releasing increased body heat in the womb. The mother can sweat, the baby just bakes like a potato wrapped in foil. So keep the core body temp resonable. You don't want the baby to come out hard-boiled. :) Greg Giddins ------------------------------ From: "Dunn, Danny J RASA" Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 14:53:45 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: RE: Training during pregnancy Anne asked: >>>>>I would just like to know if any of have had or were pregnant while training in Tae kwon do and if so what precautions were taken and any other advice you can give me. Training has been okay by my doctor for now, but I am only 2 months along. Thank you for your time Anne Skjold, 2nd Gup WTF TKD<<<<<<<<<< Anne, First, I am not a woman and have not been pregnant either. But I saw that Dakin was the only responder to your questions so far, so I thought I would let you know how my wife trained. She also trained through her 8th month with our first child. She trained as normal through the first trimester and into the fourth month. Though with no heavy contact sparring. Fourth throught 5 months I only had her spar students whose control I trusted absolutely. After the fifth month she only sparred me and only with light or no contact. After about the 5th month a hormone that is produced will make your ligaments become increasingly elastic, and that can lead to joint injury if you are not careful. After the 8th month, my wife found that her sense of balance became awkward, her joints were not stable enough and she was just too uncomfortable to train. Also be careful about falling after the fourth month or so. With proper caution on your part and that of your instructor, I don't think you should have a lot of problems training for a few more months. Hope this helps. The event will focus on pressure point application, how the points fit into any style to amplify your effectiveness and how to translate your forms into seriously effective street applications. I know, I’ve been knocked out on several occasions with the use of this information. I feel that this information is crucial to the serious martial artist. Seminar is June 9th 2001 and will be held at U.S. Taekwondo – Hapkido Martial Arts Center, 905 N. Kingsway Rd., Seffner Fl. (just outside of Tampa). One day I became a Black Belt (actually it was the third time in my third style but no one but me knew it) ... and they got quiet... 'cept this one little man. He would sneak out at me and jump out from corners and do the little silly karate dance and yell ... and then laugh. Well, one day I had enough or maybe I just wasn't in the mood ... I am not sure which ... but I kinda snapped. I picked him up by the lapels of his jacket and slammed him up and into the wall ... feet dangling a few inches from the ground. I never said a word to him ... just stared at him and then let him down. He ran immediately to my boss and reported it. I was called into the office and he closed the door and confronted both me and this little man. Asked some questions and then asked the man what he wanted done. He said he wanted me suspended for a few days for man-handling him and written up. He looked at me and asked me if black belts were supposed to do what I did and I said, NO, I did wrong and I was more sorry then he could ever know. Then he looked the man in the eye and said ... "if I write her up and send her home for a few days ... everyone in this building, the whole warehouse and all the truck drivers will know what she did to you ... is that what you want? Can you live with that?" Well, put that way ... he knew he couldn't ever live that down ... so he relented and we got a verbal reprimand and a chuckle from our boss and sent back to our desks. I felt like a small school girl. LOL ... but underneath it all ... glad, too ... because from that day forth ... that little man and I were good friends and he never harrassed me ever again. Illona << <> When? Well, there is only two or three that know I take up martial arts, and one is a pain in the a**. I don't "advertize" it either.
