My husband would usually bring her and watch my classes when she was 2-3 years old. After she turned 3, I started bringing her to my school's Saturday morning 50-minute class specifically geared towards 4-7 year olds who are not enrolled. With the instructors permission, she began taking this class when she was about 3 1/2 y/o. Of course, by this time she pretty much knew everyone involved with the school, and she felt at ease. She did so well that she asked to go to the 'big kids' class about 6 months ago. (Wearing the dobok was an incentive as well!) :-) So, now she is happily in TKD (2-3 times/week), and she should test for 8th gup in about a month! So, I think my involvement was the reason she became interested, but it is her own interest that makes her want to go to class and train. Concerning the concept of self-defense, I certainly expect that if she continues, she will develop her self-confidence and mental/physical skill. In later years, she is more likely to use self-defense in terms of reflex action and 'keeping a clear head' rather than kicking or punching her way out. So, I guess my opinion is that the self-defense concept is continually embedded as training progresses, rather than a child (or adult, for that matter) understanding the concept. Questions for the group: 1. Has anyone else made this sort of change and how was it received? 2. Since we will now have a separate kids class what recommendations do you have for running a kids only class? >> Our school has long used age segregation. The children's classes are 45 minutes and are conducted identically to the adult class. This allows for a smoother transition when the students come of age and move on to adult classes. We do allow exceptionally well-behaved children to attend adult class if they ask permission ahead of time. Adults are free to attend children's classes, but it is not recommended. - -Cheree ------------------------------ From: Chereecharmello@aol.com Date: Fri, 1 Jun 2001 11:56:35 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V8 #318 << "In fighting, choose with sense and honor." >> Dizzy, I prefer: "In fighting, choose with sense of humor." Date: Fri, 01 Jun 2001 12:09:24 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Teasing by friends Illona, Cool story about the "little man". I usually tell people that I workout at the gym, not train in martial arts (it's hard to hide the fact I'm pretty fit now). I have another question along this line. This "friend" ..... well she is a co-worker really. I wouldn't call her a "friend". She always wants me to tag along with her when she goes out. That's cool and all, but it didn't take me long to learn her "rep". She likes to pick fights with people when she goes out. Anyway, I don't know if she knows (about me in MA). But I have a feeling she does, cause the guy I was talking about that "taunts" me is a friend of hers (I wouldn't really call him a friend either). But he might have told her. She always talks about fighting around me. They both work there and I work with both of them through the day. I have to admit that I did "snap" one day with the guy. He was "taughting" me again and came at me with a tape thingy (with a sharp end on it to cut the tape) just playing around, and I automatically threw a side kick. It was a "controlled" kick, but it was enough to make him back off. He said something like "Remind me not mess with you" or "Remind me not to do that again" .... something along those lines. I guess the foot print on his jacket kinda made him think lol. He hasn't said anything to me since (thank goodness), but now I have the girl to worry about. I don't know if it's the #5 of the five codes of Tang Soo Do (In fighting, choose with since and honor), or #3 student creed (I intend to use what I learn in class constructively and defensively, to help my fellow man, and never be abusive or offensive) or maybe it's the fact they teach us in class NOT to fight. But my instincs are telling me "Don't go anywhere with her." Since I've been in martial arts, I avoid places like bars. I didn't do it on purpose. It just happened. Do you develope "instict" when ya train in MA? It's spooking me out, but yet it's kinda cool that I can "read" people like that. I told her that I don't like to fight. But I don't know if that worked. Tang Soo! A friend of mine just gave me two of them - they were given to him years ago and have been sitting around his house gathering dust. He knows nothing about how to use them. He was getting rid of some less than child-friendly items and thought I might be a good home for them considering my MA interests. Anyhow, each is about 8 inches long, metal, all one piece, and fairly heavy. The blade is triangular, the handle is thinner than the blade and has holes drilled entirely through it. I wanted to ask before I took them out and learned bad habits. Did you know that you have depleted your muscles' glycogen stores? What are they you ask? Glycogen is the fuel that powers your muscles. When you eat carbohydrates, it is stored in your liver and muscles as glycogen, however, the amount stored in your muscles is less than 400 grams. Now, here is something worth noting. According to studies, the most efficient time to rebuild your muscles’ glycogen supply is Immediately following your workout and continuing until about two hours after your workout. After two hours, your body replenishes its glycogen much more slowly. Many athletes finish their workout, have some water and don’t eat until much later. What they really should be going is getting carbohydrates from any of the Bread/Starch, Fruit, or Milk groups as soon as possible. So, make a post-workout refueling stop part of your routine. Your muscles will thank you for it.
