There are so many different versions of Hapkido history that I don't know what to believe. Some people out there don't even believe that GM Choi, Yong Sool ever studied DRAJ, because he had lost his certification on the trip back to Korea. When I first began to study Hapkido I was told that GM Ji, Han Jae was the founder of Hapkido, but as I began to read more articles and books with history, I found that many of the high ranking Hapkido people give all the credit to GM Choi. Many of the people who say this were students of GM Ji first, and then later on trained with GM Choi. I have heard that this happens because most Koreans have many instructors but only give credit to the best one that they have had and then name that person their instructor. IMHO I think that GM Ji deserves a lot of credit for Hapkido. If you look at the difference between Yoo-Sool (or Yoo Kwon Sool) and Hapkido you will see that Hapkido encompasses so much more as far as kicking and meditation. Now I'm not trying to knock GM Choi, he was the man. I have also heard that GM Ji came up with the name Hapkido and gave it to GM Choi to use, and I think I like that idea best. All this makes it so confusing for us Hapkidoists, and makes it so hard to teach the history. Sometimes I want to say that I don't care about the history and just do what I'm doing in my own little world. Seems that KSW's Chinese roots are far closer, more recent, than those of TSD,,, yes? TSD's roots -are- Chinese, but only after going through Okinawa and Japan w/the associated changes. The ministry said four civic groups, including the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI), gave 5.64 billion won ($4.39 million) worth of indirect aid to the North via the Korean National Red Cross (KNRC). Seven other groups sent medical and agricultural equipment, and wheat and vinyl worth 4.35 billion won ($3.38 million) in aid to the poverty-stricken country. "Civilian donations for the first five months of this year totaled 41.6 billion won ($32.4 million), nearly quadruple the 10.9 billion won ($8.48 million) during the same period last year," a government official said. "This reflects the growing interest in North Korea since the inter-Korean summit last June." The official also said 328 South Korean civilians traveled to North Korea in May on 27 occasions. The number of civilian visitors to North Korea for the first five months of the year reached 499, a 2.9-fold increase from 173 people a year ago. "In May, government-backed aid to North Korea stood at $43.58 million," he said, adding that the Seoul government sent 35,000 tons of corn and 168,000 tons of fertilizer to the famine-stricken country via the World Food Program (WFP). ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sat, 09 Jun 2001 8:26:15 PDT Subject: the_dojang: more on textbooks Textbook controversy : Analysis of Korea's requests to Japan http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/textbook/textbook.shtml Korea Herald reporters Choe Yong-shik, Hwang Jang-jin and Kim Min-hee have worked together to prepare this page comparing the most controversial passages in Japanese textbooks with historical facts and accounts presented by South Korean historians.
