I would like to add to that "amen" but with a caveat. I have often heard people say that life is too short for one person to make all the necessary learning mistakes themselves. To off-set this, we often try to learn from the mistakes people have made before us. To put this in evolutionary terms, for each animal that we have running around the planet today, there were a lot of animals who didn't adapt and survive quite as well. I share this thought because I think that if we MA people want to get the best bang for our training buck, we need to have an appreciation for how our arts have come down to us. I am sure there are reasons why certain training and fighting approaches have continued while others have been discarded and life is too short (and too dear) for all of us to put ourselves in life-and-death situations repeatedly to retest all of the material that has gone before us. Furthermore (from the "you-can't-put-you-foot-in-the-same-water-twice" file) the exact same circumstances or combination of circumstances that shaped the development of martial traditions cannot be duplicated in every respect. My conclusion, then, is that there is a temptation to compare one system against another in seach of the ideal martial tradition, or the most original. There is also the temptation to want to capture a single art at a single point in time and space and hold that place as sacred for all time. What I would suggest is that perhaps by knowing the inter-relationships among the various arts we can get a better appreciation for the nature of change and development in martial traditions and perhaps more effectively contribute to it. Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 8:59:03 PDT Subject: the_dojang: black belt Wondering out loud... What would the Karate-Judo-ish martial arts be like with the black belt (or midnight blue belt for our many TSD friends)? Many arts do not use this approach, which -perhaps- is one reason why they do not have the millions of $$ paying practitioners that TKD, TSD, HKD, KSW, HRD, Karate, Judo, etc, do. Is it primarily for business reasons that the popularity of the black belt continues? Since you were so gratefully candid, I feel comfortable enough to come out of the closet...I was diagnosed with ADD as an adult. My brother, fortunately, was diagnosed at age 5. The diagnosis came much to my great relief because I long felt that I was, well, insane. The inability to concentrate is not exactly a debilitating aspect of my being, but it always raised issues of inferiority. I often tried too hard to over compensate for what I thought I was lacking... I have an overwhelming sense of compassion for children with ADD/ADHD (and yes, the disorders pose similar yet quite unique challenges.) So I think my self an advocate of such, gearing my education towards helping such children. To keep this of interest to the Digest... I actually began to take karate, beginning in Is In Ryu (sp?), at the advice of a family friend who said that the MAs may help with my brother's hyperactivity, impulsivity and lack of attention. I joined, not thinking that it would help me, but because I was apprehensive of leaving such a young child in that environment. The martial arts have taught me to accept my limitations with reverence. Not being able to 'master' one thing or another does not make a person a failure as long as you get back up every single time you fall...(oh boy do I have the bruises to prove my falls:0) - -Cheree ------------------------------ From: J Thomas Howard Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 11:48:18 -0500 (CDT) Subject: the_dojang: Black Belt Definitions... It is interesting to read the various comments about what a black belt means. We had this discussion awhile ago (a couple of years ago, if I recall correctly) so it is interesting to compare what people say now to what others said the last time we discussed this. Anyway: my two cents. I wrote a semi-conversational blurb about this 2 years ago, and it is at: http://users.binary.net/thomcat/Articles/MAW2_99.html if anyone wants to go take a look. I thought I would toos out some of these names and where I saw them in the hopes that someone could provide a little more information about them. Here's a few candidates. If anyone can provide additional material, many thanks in advance. 1.) Hanho --- has a series of combat strategy books advertised in the catalogue from TURTLE PRESS. Reportedly has 30 years experience in MA including TKD, HKD and something called Junsado. 2.) Lee, Chang-soo --- also from the TURTLE PRESS is identified as head coach of the demonstration team for the World Hapkido Federation in Seoul. 3.) Robert Owens --- teaches the fundamentals of Japanese sword and has two books with TURTLE PRESS. 4.) Lim, Dong-kyu --- heads up the National Demonstration Team of Kyung Dang and re-enacts the hyung from the Muye Tobo Tongji.
