Master Booth, besides being an old and dear friend, is a very capable HapKiDo practitioner and clinician, and if nothing else, a GREAT entertainer. Would that all would approach life with the same approach. The "Victim Complex" is so prevalent today it's quite discouraging - one must wonder where the comfort is in feeling sorry for oneself. That is, aside from momentary flashes of self pity, to which everyone is prone; the true champions in life, however, are the ones who move beyond those moments and go on living and learning. Is it primarily for business reasons that the popularity of the black belt continues?..." >> In an ideal world; no. In this world; too often. For those who truly dedicate themselves to the arts, the belt is a symbol of perseverance, accomplishment (this is a subjective element-you fill in the rest)... This topic has been discussed time and time again, but the perpetuation of ranking systems seems to have a lot to do with the anti-American trait of deferred gratification. I see the black belt as less of a business-gaining tactic than the implementation of the colored belts that proceed it. We want to see immediate payoffs for our time and efforts! Would the MA's retain greater integrity if we all remained belt-less until we were promoted to BB? What if there was no visual indication of rank? It seems that many people fail to appreciate the work that goes into earning any rank...Even the person tying a 'white belt' for the first time has achieved a great deal. Who am I stealing this line from: "A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step?" For those who "buy the belt:" You can lie to others, but you can never lie to yourself. - -Cheree ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Fri, 15 Jun 2001 11:59:31 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: Korean Culture CD Forwarding... Dear colleagues, For many of you who are interested in Korean art history in relation to your own fields or who teach Korean art as part of a broader curriculum I would like to recommend a recent release of CD-rom published by the Korean Cultural Center in Los Angeles. It contains all the articles published in "Korean Culture" from 1980 to 1999. Over the last two decades "Korean Culture" magazine has published a significant number of articles on Korean art and archaeology, written by experts in the field for both specialists and general readers. Essays cover a great range of topics, spanning from Neolithic sites and Koguryo tomb murals to Choson dynasty painting and ceramics, and to contemporary Korean and Korean-American art. It also has a series of Korean holdings in Western museums. Moreover, the magazine has dealt with other important contextual materials on Korean history, religion, literature, philosophy, etc. While I occasionally had difficulties to find specific information through a keyword search, several indices arranged by authors, titles, and subjects give a quick overview and make the CD-rom very user-friendly. Publications in English on Korean art history and archaeology are certainly rare. And those that are available are often too general and give a very incomplete picture of the state of the field. The articles in Korean Culture partly fill the gaps and provide excellent readings for students and an introduction to fields we might like to further explore ourselves.
