I entered a tournament for the forms when I was an orange belt (8th gup). However, since it cost no extra at that tournament to enter sparring at the same time, I signed up for that as well. Contrary to all expectations, logic and reason, I won my division. From that point on, the fear was gone. ;) The difficult part is getting somebody afraid of sparring to A) enter and B) win. ;) - -Sarah Pride- ------------------------------ From: Bruce.Sims@med.va.gov Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 13:13:26 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: RE: KSW Stuff Dear Chris: "...I was recently on the World Kuk Sool Association web site and noticed a couple of things that leave me a little confused...." As long as we are pulling questions from the "dazed-&confused" File perhaps this would be a good time to slip in a couple of other KSW questions. 1.) GM Seo is reported by Dr Kimm to have studied "shipalgwe" (spell?) which I am given to believe means "chaun fa" in Korean. Can anyone verify this and advise me what style this might have been? I would settle simply for knoqing what styles were most popular in Korea at the time GM Seo studied. "...2) There is a special announcement on the site stating that Kuk Sool Won is now recognized by the Korean Government as an official governing body for Martial Arts. I presume this would of course include Kuk Sool. Will this have any impact on other Kido Hae's governance of Kuk Sool?..." Will somebody pull-lease provide me with an operational definition of "recognized by the Korean Government." I honestly have NO idea what this phrase means though it periodically pops up in notices and advertising. (Come to think of it I have never seen it anywhere BUT notices and advertising.) And while we are at it, I understood that Kuk Sool Won was under the KIDOHAE just like all the other kwans and styles. Is this announcement to mean that the KIDOHAE and the KSW organization are on an equal footing and are simultaneously responsible for the other 30 some-odd arts in Korea? Is there some sort of turf-war going on here I should be aware of? Thanks, Chris and Best Wishes, Bruce ------------------------------ From: "Dizzy S." Similar in the way that Karate-do or Tang Soo Do = China Hand Way. My understanding is that Ship Pal Ki translates to 18 techniques. From a former issue of the_dojang former KSW master, Dr. HY Kimm, apparently indicates... >With regards Ship Pal Ki... when I called Dr. Kimm's school asking questions >about his Hapkido Bible, I eventually asked him about Kuk Sool. He said that >Kuk Sool is, generally speaking, a combination of Hapkido and Ship Pal Ki. From what I've read, I was under the impression that Kuk Sool had been recognized by the Korean Government back in the early 1970's! Can anyone elaborate on what form the recognition took, and how this recent acknowledgement differes from the one in the 1970's? Due to some construction work that must be done at the school we have had to change this location. The seminar will still be from 1 to 4 P.M. this Sunday, June 24th at the following location: Grandmaster Alemany's Karate School 1319 20th Ave. (off of Irving St.) San Francisco, CA 94122 (415)665-3848 As I indicated previously this should be an outstanding seminar with one of the best martial arts people I have ever met. Take advantage of this opportunity since Tony doesn't come up here too ofter from L.A. One last note. On Sunday, July 15th from 3 to 5 P.M. I am hosting a martial arts extraganza at the French American International School. I am bringing in the world famous Korean Tiger Demo Team who have appeared all over the world including demonstrating at the Olympic Games. We will be having the Team Forms Champions from the AAU Nationals opening the show. We will also include several outstanding matches as part of this event. It will definitely be one of the best martial arts events this summer. Please let your students know about it and encourage them to attend. The Tiger Team consists of 40 young Korean martial artists who will be an inspiration for young students. All school owners will be on the guest list but we are encouraging them to bring at least 10 students so that we can cover the high overhead of bringing the Team here. Also if anyone would be interested in housing one or two of these young Korean athletes please let me know as soon as possible. I need to obtain housing for these 40 youngsters on the Saturday night before the event. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated. You can e-mail me or call me at my dojang (415)864-4827 or at home (415)492-0912. Thank you in advance for you support and I look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday with Tony Ho. Peace.
