I made myself do it anyway. If someone cannot spar in a controlled atmosphere knowing their opponents are there to learn just as they are, how in the world would they hope to be able to defend in the real deal? I see contact sparring experience as absolutely essential in training. DS ------------------------------ From: Wmakarate@aol.com Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 10:04:35 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Hip replacement advice The mother of one of our youth karate students is interested in taking classes also. She is thirty something, and had a hip relaced a few years ago, the result of a degenerative arthritic condition which stemmed from an accident. I know that a number of you have had hip replacement surgery. For you, and for those of you who have had students who have undergone this procedure, what advice do you have, for her and for me? Should she began training? What, if anything, should she avoid? We often do heavy bag work - what impact (no pun intended) might this have on her bionic hip? What types of warmups would be good/bad for her? Also, is it my imagination, or is there an inordinate number of martial artists who are afflicted with this condition? If so, why? Thanks! To users of the Digital Dictionary of Buddhism and CJK-English Dictionary: The dictionaries are back on line (www.acmuller.net) for your use, but please be aware that you still might experience periods of intermittent slowness and/or inaccessibility. We have succeeded in blocking access from our hacker coming through Korea Telecom, but he has responded by putting our site under continuous attack with hundreds of thousands of requests, thus making it difficult for users in certain areas to enter at different times. We have written dozens of messages to Korean authorities and administrators at Korea Telecom, but so far, none of them seem to be interested in addressing this problem. I would imagine that this person will eventually tire of this game and move on to other things. But if there is anyone on the list who has a connection with Korea Telecom, the Korean authorities or diplomatic corp, who can help out here, it would be deeply appreciated. "The summer harvest is likely to drop sharply from last year's level of 300,000 tons," he told reporters. The official said that the drought, regarded as the worst in a century, might also affect the North's autumn harvest, because North Koreans missed the rice planting season. "Although the recent rainfall might alleviate a drought in North Korea, the growth of rice will be subject to many negative factors, including a lack of appropriate sunlight, because of belated planting," he said. However, the official said that the three-day rainfalls that concentrated on the North's western areas from June 17 might alleviate the lack of water for agricultural and electricity-generating purposes. Last year, North Korea's autumn harvest reached 3.59 million tons, the official said, adding that the volume for this year will face a substantial drop. According to the North's press reports, the drought affected 72 percent of agricultural fields, while up to 90 percent of potatoes, wheat, barley and corn dried out. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 14:44:37 PDT Subject: the_dojang: book'em, Dano... Dano Festivals Dano is the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar and is a day farmers pray before meeting the summer so that they may earn a good harvest in the fall. This year the third biggest national holiday, after New Year's Day and Chuseok, falls on June 25. The Gangneung Dano Festival consists of a ceremony praying to the mountain gods, sansinje, and various traditional games, like ssireum competitions, mask plays, nongak performances, and also one of the most famous Dano specialties; riding on a swing. The feast will be headed by Namdaecheon in Gangneung, Gangwon Province from June 23 through June 27. The Beopseong Dano Festival (http://www.danoje.co.kr/) will be held in Beopseong-myeon at Yeonggwang-gun, Jeonnam Province from June 24 to June 26. What is special about the Beopseong Dano festival is that the prayer is given to the sea gods for a good year of yellow corbina, for which fish Yeonggwang is famous. The Gyeongsan Dano Festival (http://dano.wo.ro/) at Jain commemorates General Han who protected the Kingdom of Silla from invaders and thanks to his bravery left many legends. Jain Jeonsan Girl's High School will hold the feast from June 24 through June 26. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 14:53:59 PDT Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V8 #352 ******************************** It's a great day for Taekwondo!
