I'm going to be moving to the Overland Park, Ks. area in the next month and have been looking at some Dojang's there. I was hoping someone out there might know of one of the places I've found. It's called Ko's Black Belt Academy and is run by a Grandmaster Ri Kon Ko. (http://www.kosblackbelt.com/home/default.htm) It say's on the schools webpage that Grandmaster Ko is an 8th Dan in TKD, a 6th Dan in Judo, and a 5th Dan in Hapkido. As I am always leary of ending up at a McDojang I was hoping someone out there might know/know of Master Ko and could confirm that he is a good instructer. Or if you know of any other good TKD/Hapkido schools in the Kansas City/Overland Park area. I note you had no constructive criticisms for my position, that you made no arguement regarding the commercial concerns I expressed, nor that you bring no substantial contribution to raising the potential of the discussion. In this you may have unknowingly supported exactly that position embodied in my post. Thank you for your assistance even if it required that you deport yourself as a moron to accomplish it. I just want to throw in some of my thoughts. My opinion of what a Mc-Dojang is; Is a Martial Art school with no substance. They (Mc-Dojangs) are just there. Comparable to a bowling night, they only workout maybe twice a week or less. Their classes are easy and repetitive, and then they go out for a beer afterwards. For some reason the students at these schools look up to there instructor like a God, when I have seen some green belts that are better than some of these instructors. Some of these schools pump out black belts that may know the curriculum but have not mastered it by any means. That's not to say that some school's definition of a black belt isn't different from my definition. Some schools ask more of their students than I ask of mine. I really don't think that there is any kind of a standard anymore for what a black-belt should look like, or what a master should for that matter. I guess some schools have it and some don't, and your lucky if you get one that does. I started out at a Mc-Dojang, but whe! n I met my master and began trai ning with him I was opened up to a whole new world that I didn't know existed. It's pretty amazing what all the Mc-dojangs miss. On a lighter note. I have been doing a lot of soul searching lately about where I am and what I want to do with my life. I want to teach full-time and that's all I want to do, but of course I'm afraid to get started. I do have a full-time job right now and I don't have time to do both. I feel I would have so much to offer my students. I don't want to let my knowledge go to waist, but I don't want to make any financial mistakes that could ruin me. I guess what my question is, is how did some of you out there get started? Is there any advice any of you veterans can give about starting a school? Any website or book suggestions will be very helpful. E-mail me with any info. Thanks in advance. The lazy student that wants to test but is not a very active student. To solve that problem we stated that a student must be an 'active student' in order to test and we designated an active student as one who averages 3 classes a week during the entire required time period before the examination. Suddenly, all those border line students started showing up to class more:) Jere R. Hey, guys, I've had fun reading your posts... Nice to hear you. I'm a 1st Dan in Kuk Sool Won, and I am going to go to school (college) in Provo, UT this fall. Unfortunately, there are no Kuk Sool schools there. Does anyone here practice Kuk Sool and live in that general area? (Yeah, I know it's a long shot.... but I have to try!) When it comes to the grandma/kids thing, I agree that family and school/work must come first. I myself have had to skip out on tournaments and special training seminars often, and my instructor has always been understanding. However, when I can make it, I always try to do so, and I don't let any unimportant thing interfere.... Hot pink uniforms.... that's interesting.... Personally, I've always liked black :) Thanks, - Dan ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo!
