Hello Illona and Jere: A number of years ago, one of my more gifted computer literate students designed a (Filemaker Pro based) database for me. Among the wonderful things it does, it keep attendance at the click of a mouse. As I mentioned before, I check my studnets every two months, and we hold our major belt testing session every six months. Students have had two check ups already, and as enough time is accumulated (and are paid up) the students become "eligible" to test for their belt. Ofcourse, there is NO guarantee, but I AM pretty sure every candidate can pass. My computer keeps track of these prerequisites, and I print out an "eligibility list" in advance. As you both have noted, students make every effort to rectify their attendance and dues are paid on a much more consistend basis. Thanks to the computer, this is now a simple job. Sincerely, Rudy National Korean Martial Arts Association PS I hope everyone has a terrific holiday weekend. Be safe! ------------------------------ From: "Dizzy S." Date: Sat, 30 Jun 2001 22:36:26 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: thinking too much Hiya all. I need help on something. I just learned my new form (Pyung ahn e dan) three weeks ago. I still have trouble with it. A friend of mine (that helps me sometimes after class) said I "think" too much when I do the form or tech and I screw it up. She said to not "think" about it as much. Just do it. She also said that it's the first form in the TSD series with kicks and "reverse" blocks in it, and that could be throwing me off. The first four were easy to learn .... for me anyways, but this one is a toughy (and it only gets harder .... eeeekkkk lol). How can I change the "thinking too much" to just "doing"? Any advice will be most helpful. Thanks in advance. Tang Soo! Even the poorest college student will lose more spare change in the course of a year. Why not save the money and just take "aerobic Tae kick boxing do" and forgo the uniform altogether? I'm sure your school has such a class in the student rec center or wherever. That way you save yourself from the mendacity of those martial arts people. A lot of martial artists (sic) won't like it, because it is simply about combat, rather than presenting itself as a lifelong system of learning. I agree with you about learning useful self-defense in months rather than years - a lot of the modern combative systems do that (the stuff I do - American Combative Science -- is no exception). The problem with this is that when teaching combatives as KM does, you have to limit your clientele. You can do this by only teaching the police or military, or you can limit it by being VERY selective of the students you teach. The idea behind these systems is that you can't take chances with any opponent because you don't know what they're capable of or exactly what weapons they have. That means you have to avoid fights like the plague, because once you get into one, you know your reflexes are going to lead you to eliminate that opponent. Too many people get convinced by the movies that once they know this stuff they should go out and pick bar fights. That is a hard thing to get out of their heads, and frankly, a combative system like Krav Maga will attract more than its fair share of psychotics. Taijiquan and Aikido don't have that problem because they have (usually) a much different marketing approach. I think you're quite right for separating KM from martial arts - it is much closer to simple combatives, and that's not a bad thing if you have a good teacher. And it sounds like you do. My mother turns 91 this year. I had her as a special guest judge at a testing last year and she had a blast.
