R. West" Date: Mon, 2 Jul 2001 19:04:50 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Thoughts along the way I have seen several interesting threads pass by during the last week or two, and I would like to take this moment to add my slant. First, on the choice between attending a family function of some importance as opposed to testing, let me repeat what I say to my students on a regular basis, " The only person in this school that does not have a life outside of HapKiDo is ME ", so I try to accommodate my students as well as I can, with the full understanding that many of my younger folks (the ones that don't drive) have no choice in the matter, and in the South, family is VERY important. I may be an activity to some and a passion to others, but it is not MY call to say why my students train, and you can never be sure when the "activity" mentality turns into a lifelong pursuit........ How to tell if you are joining a McDojang....This is simple, just ask the instructor prior to joining, " how long will it take me to reach black belt?", and if the answer is any sort of a guarantee, the next question from the instructor will be "do you want fries with that?". I called an instructor at one of my local McDojangs a year or so ago and asked how long it would take me to earn a black belt at his school, and the practiced response was " I GUARANTEE that you will be a black belt in 18 months". My next question was "will I be able to defend myself?". The answer was "of course you will, you'll be a black belt!". I then advised this person that I had no arms or legs....and the silence was DEAFENING!.........As far as character is concerned, we have tradition at our 1st dan tests that I am rather fond of. The last question asked by me prior to awarding a new black belt is "how long does it take an average person to reach black belt?". The response is "Sir, an average person will NEVER reach black belt". By this exchange, the new 1st realizes that through years of sacrifice, hard work and determination, he or she has made themselves something other than "average". Anyone can be "average", but it takes character to excel and pull yourself out of the mud of mediocrity..........Just my opinions, I could be wrong...J. R. Yes the "no thought" is the result you try and achieve, but you have to think about and break down each move before you can make them flow. Walking through the pattern, practicing at an angle or in new surroundings (such as a park or beach), then Blindfolded, (Mark the floor at the starting position, it's funny where you can end up), then Video tape yourself / your students and review. Most people are the harshest critics. By taping and showing people what they are REALLY like during forms seems to work. Just telling someone to relax can work but then showing them that their neck disappears just before each kick does make a huge difference. The other technique I use is to get each rank to show a practical application of a move within each pattern. Makes them dissect and think about it more then just learning the "moves". Hello Ray: I hear the same sentiment out here in the cold country. This is why I posed the question in the first place. We all know that pendulums have a habit of swinging a bit too far (example Canadian young offenders act) before they swing back. If this concern becomes strong enough, the manner in which we present defensive tactics will no doubt swing with it. Hence my reason for trying to keep a finger on the pulse of the issue. I used to teach Leos in a high intensity manner similar to KM; however, a decade or so ago we were suddenly and rather abruptly told that we needed to change our system to be much softer. I'd like to be a bit more prepared this time around. As an old dog, the new tricks need a bit of time. BTW, thanks Mark. The info you gave is valuable to me. "IMNSHO ALL adults begin in MA for one reason - insecurity." Hmmmmm...sorry, but there are precious few "absolutes" in the world...at least per my personal experience. I might buy the idea that a slight majority of individuals start for this reason, but I've known too many that got involved because their doctor told them, "start exercising, or you'll be dead in five years". Definitely a more utilitarian reason to start training than overcoming some imagined physical/mental/emotional shortcoming. Add to this the huge number of adults I've met who started training only after their own children started. The parents got involved as a vehicle to share fun, quality time with their young ones. In addition, I've known numerous couples seeking physical activities that could be done together, and they gave MA's a try since it's a logical option to fill that particular want. There are literally dozens of reasons that any particular adult may decide to sign up for classes...the need to overcome insecure thoughts and/or feelings about oneself is only one. Just can't agree with "all".
