Yes, that was GM Choi's claim, but then he also claimed to be present when Takeda Sensei committed sepuku :) . This is one of those issues that will probably carry-on forever. After all, we don't even know (for sure) where GM Choi learned his Yawara, much less agree on who did what when. GM JB Lee has someone other than GM Choi -or- GM Ji using the name Hapkido first. GM Ji lays solid claim to the name Hapkido. GM Choi was apparently given that name to use by GM Ji, yet in 1968 GM Choi promoted both GM Ji and GM Lee to 8th Dan. I've always been curious, but not very, as to in what art they were promoted to 8th Dan. In GM Choi's Yawara? In GM Ji's Hapkido? In GM Lee's HwaRang Do? In GM Ji's Hapkido that GM Choi later called his art instead of Yawara? It would be somewhat interesting to know, perhaps. In any event, Dr/DoJu/GM Kimm probably described it perfectly,,, GM Choi struck the match and then GM Ji started the fire. Gee, all these questions... I should change my name to Bruce... :) Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: JSaportajr@aol.com Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2001 21:38:47 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: Training Lineage In a message dated 7/9/2001 9:12:09 PM Eastern Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << Training Lineage >> Ray, where did you study with Mikio Nishiushi? I met him when he had a school in Omaha Nebraska. He taught Wado Ryu Karate and Okinawan Weapons. My brother studied at that dojo when he was a kid. My father, who is no longer living was a surgeon in Omaha and did Nishiushi Sensie a favor on two occasions and volunteered to be the physician at his tournament. He remembered how polite and deferential all the Okinawan Masters were, every time they would pass in front of the table where he sat they would stop and bow, despite that he had no martial arts experience. He was sort of tickled to sit there and have people constantly bowing to him all day. Also, Michael. I hope you don't take offense to this question. I see that you are in Omaha and say that Pellegrini is your Hapkido teacher. Leaving the controversy regarding Mr. Pellegrini aside, since he is not located in Omaha, I imagine that this would make regular training impossible and restrict it to seminars and camps and perhaps periodic private lessons. I suppose that's fine, but why wouldn't you train regularly under a very good Hapkido Master who is right in your city, which would make regular training more feasible. I am referring to Suk Ki Shin, who is in Omaha and is an excellent Hapkido master and in his day was a superb Judo man. From the post above and from previous posts it is obvious that I used to live in Omaha. Also, GrandMaster Mountain Kim, who teaches in Virginia and was the first Korean to medal in Olympic Judo has spoken very highly of Master Shin as a Judo and Hapkido teacher.
