There is no comparison between the two men or Arts. MooYeKwan is the registered is the name of Master Whalen's registered in Korea. Combat Hapkido is the name of someone's version of hapkido. One Man lived and trained on the Mat learning Hapkido (Master Whalen)and one did it by seminar and photo ops." My original post was: "Korean Martial Arts??? What makes an art a Korean art? Is it because it is founded on priciples found in other Korean arts. Like Combat Hapkido or MooYeKwan was. Or is it only if it is founded by a person of Korean heritage such as GM Choi, Young Sool and Major General Choi, Hong Hi who studied Japanese arts before founding their own arts." My question was only this. Can someone who is not Korean, found a Korean martial art? GM John Pelligini's style is recognized by the Kido Hae who also has an office in Korea. And they are a more larger and more well know organization than the off-shoot KHA. I was not comparing Combat Hapkido to MooYeKwan, I was only using them as examples of Martial Arts founded by non-Koreans. Some people believe that it is the source of the founders original training that determines if a style is Korean or not. While others believe it is your ethnicity that is the determining factor. No Comparision was made between the two in my post. We are very lucky in this forum to have several members with a great deal of experience who are willing to take the time to contribute to the conversations that go on here. The spirit of posting to me is the same as that of a group of old friends gathered around a fireplace nursing a few cold ones while they talk about their hobbies, passions, jobs and other interests. They get a little sacastic at times and like to rib each other about funny things that happened in the past but all in all it is in good fun and builds a fraternal feeling among them all. But sometimes it seems that people will allow their emotions to cloud their judgements and mistake the intent of the poster. There is no way to pick up on a tone of voice or facial expressions in the postings. We have to try to guess sometimes what they really meant. I thank those who do contribute here. I have been told by a few people that they don't post here because they are too famous or important to participate in this type of exchange. I think that some of the people who post here do so because they are too important a source of knowledge not to feel obligated to help. I'm a 11th keub in Hanmudo and I'm going to have to break for the first time in my grading in one week. My instructor told me I'd be fine, but we practised today and nothing I could do would break the board. I was using my hips and hitting with the right part of my elbow (it's elbow strike). Could it be that I'm just not strong enough? And if so, is there anything I can do about it before next week? Is Doju Ji going to be at your school Veteran's Day Weekend again this year to teach? That has become kind of a Florida tradition that people look forward to. If Joo Bang Lee chose to call his art Hwarangdo, who are we to judge? All martialarts are kissing cousins... maybe he thought he could improve upon what he learned? just my thoughts... i just dun see why he shoul be singled out.. people have changed things to fit their needs since the dawn of time.. and one thing i appreciate it, is that he freely admits he doesn't teach "hapkido" but his own art. my .02 Frank ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sat, 14 Jul 2001 10:57:01 PDT Subject: the_dojang: new WTF website Mentioned here before, but also just mentioned in the recent edition of the WTF Official Quarterly Magazine, WTF Taekwondo (Summer 2001, No.79) New WTF Web Site Opens The WTF opened its new Internet home page with the URL http://www.wtf.org as of June 22. They do, however, stand for the benefit of anyone who wishes to question Master Harold Whalen's abilities as a Hapkido sunsu, an instructor and master of his own Kwan, or his high standing with more than one officially recognized Hapkido organization. > I just tire of the bitterness. I tire of people's bitterness or > attitude towards Kwanjang Pellegrini. I tire of the issue of what is and > what isn't Hapkido, I'm just tired. So Whatever! I'll just teach and be the > best that I can be and all that don't like it can just be as well. I agree fully with your last comment, but I hope you won't choose to see the desire to excel and to have others respect your efforts as bitterness. There are as many different reasons to be involved with the martial arts as there are people involved. From more than ten years of personal association, I can safely say Master Whalen's motives are personal growth in his own personal abilities, as well as contributing to the growth and the positive recognition of Hapkido. As any of us would, Master Whalen is concerned when someone questions his motives without merit. Standing up for oneself is not bitterness. > After many discussions with > those that Speak Korean I formally named it the Dan Il Kwan. I guess I could just ask my wife but what does Dan Il mean? I'm familiar with the very common Tong Il which means unity or unification but I'm not familiar with Dan Il.
