They run under ITF or USTF rules and regs. For the most part they are well run and a lot of fun. I would like to see more people stay and watch the BB. There have been arguments both ways on the issue. I would, however, like to remind you all (very humbly) that it isn't the students responsibility to support the black belts at tournaments. Before you start pushing the reply button, let me explain. I can sum this up fairly easily: without color belts, there is no reason for black belts. The primary purpose of the black belt rank holder is to teach color belts. I recently went to the ITF world championships. It was a great event. But I just saw to many people caught up in being a hot shot black belt. That isn't what TKD is about, IMHO. All the wanted to do was compete but with out giving back something of what they have learned than they aren't a "true" martial artist, again IMHO (or not so HO). I've never heard of such a thing. One of my instructor's never gave a young lady who tested and paid in full for it ... her black belt and he had to meet her in small claims court to explain why. She chewed gum during her test. The Judge asked him why he didn't ask her to dispose of it ... he said she should have known better ... so he had a choice ... either give her her belt and certificate or give her her money back. He opted to give her her money back. And of course she never came back to the school ... she went on to another school and acquired a black belt in their style and competed in tournaments against our school and beat our butts ... as she was had been one of the best competitors at our school. There is something about the uniform that gives me inspiration to be serious about solo training. In street clothes, it's just too easy to walk away, or get involved with something else. But, when you got your dress whites on, well, look out Loretta! I don't know if it's the snap of the uniform, the history of your training that the uniform carries, or that I just like getting dressed-up (out?). But it is a very real motivator! Now, the opposite is true when I have a partner. A spur of the moment sparring match with a fellow Martial Artist, can literally last for an hour (with breaks, of course ;-), all the while in street clothes! It's neat to think that as well as we all get along on the list, if we could ever all get together in person, we would have one heck of a time! Thanks. After teaching and educating in the art that I love with all my heart, my church has decided that they need to recover space for other activities so they have given me until October 1 to leave. I am not ready to open a school in a location again. I have been enjoying my part time teaching this last year (versus the full time schedule that I had working 50 hours/week as a programmer analyst and then running the school about 30 hours a week. I have tried the area YMCA's but of course they already have programs. I am out of options now so for a brief time the Dan Il Kwan will be closed :( Michael Rowe Dan Il Kwan - Gym of Unity Unity Church of Omaha 3424 N 90th Street Omaha, Nebraska 68134 ------------------------------ From: FGS & KVF Date: Wed, 08 Aug 2001 09:51:00 -0700 Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V8 #467 > Rick writes: > > > I have made it clear to all tonight that if they cannot commit a day to a > > tournament to support their black belts, we don't need to support their > > tournament careers. There are a number of people who responded to this statement. Not all agreed with it. I would have to say for my 2 cents, that when I go to a tournament with others from my school, I watch their competition when I am not in a ring myself. I stay for anyone in my school, but leave after my events are over if no one else has more events. I am a color belt, and enjoy watching and cheering on my fellow competitors from my school or others, but I admit that I go infrequently, as tournaments are slow, usu. not on time and take up an entire day. I do not stay for BB events unless I know someone in competition. It is my choice to stay and watch, but I have no kids and my spouse knows that that particular day is devoted to MA and I probably won't be home early enuff to do anything else. However, if I had kids who get tired and hungry and grouchy, I probably would not make them stay til the very end since they would be overtired (and anyone with any kid experience knows what happens with really overtired kids) and probably make life difficult for me and others around them. So, I don't blame people for not wanting to stay til all hours to watch every event that has someone from their school in it. I think if they participate in school demos, show up and practice regularly and with diligence, they are giving to the school. Everyone has to give in their own way.
