"I've never heard of such a thing." I have seen this on a couple of occasions, in various arts. Once I was witness to an instructor in Aiki-Jutsu (Japanese "hard" version of Aikido) banish a instructor trainee (also a BB - as is the requirement in that art) from his Dojo for "Unacceptable Behavior". The infractions were numerous and revolved around personality and attitude. The student (of considerable years experience) was told to leave the Dojo, take ALL of his gear, and NEVER return. I have also witnessed this in Songahm Taekwondo on several occasions. Always with numerous warnings, other sanctions, and all left with any gear they "owned", and none were "stripped" of their rank. These moves were done as a form of "quality control". I firmly believe that not only were they correct and "just", but highly neccessary! We as Martial Artists and Instructors MUST insure that those who learn from us learn not only techniques, but also the SPIRIT of Martial Arts! While on a completely different mailing list, the members banded together and developed a bumper sticker for members of the group to purchase. Just curious if our 1000+ membership has any interest in developing a bumper sticker (window sticker) that would announce our membership on the list? They could be used on our vehicles, in our schools, etc. Anyone/everyone on the list talented enough to put together a graphic that represents the list could submit their design of a proposed sticker. We could then put it onto a web site for all to view. At some point, we could then vote, and the most popular design would "win". While I have the web background to post and track voting, I would need some help coordinating the actual printing of the stickers. If anyone on the list is involved with, or knows a printer, perhaps we could all work together to create something special for the group. I envision a design that would cut across our individual styles and further promote the friendships and good will that currently exists. Who knows, perhaps one day you'll find yourself behind a fellow list member at a red light! Any thoughts, or interest????? We have been holding class in the same school for over 20 years. We do need to find other space during regular school vacations but that hasn't been a big problem. The cost, in our area, is very reasonable and the darn places are clean. Also, try Elks, Moose or similar service clubs. They will often let you have space during the off times (week nights) for free or very little cost, especially if you have a lot of kids in class. I've also found this teaches younger students patience. Can make for a long day for some though if I have a ton of students in the competition. Overall beginner students seem to like being able to see the advanced belts compete and vice versa. It is a great learning experience. I haven't seen it beyond interdojang though. Sorry to hear that. Trust me (from moving several times for my job), time spent not teaching...although personal training times goes way up, is not near as satisfying as teaching as well. When I did not have evening availability due to different schedules with my spouse and family time (dad), I started a small noon class. Funny enough, it is made up of just black belts! We play really hard and get a lot done, and, the teaching satisfaction is there. Try noon (or 6am) if conventional times do not work. Personally, it is not my main income and I'd rather have a few dedicated people I can spend quality control time with than the much bigger classes I've had. Not a slam on big schools, been there-done that, just a personal opinion at this stage of my life. Luck! Hello Ilona: I did not take his rank away, I simply took the belt and uniform that sport my name. Since they are not part and parcel of the test and rank (and fees), it was my choice. I simply gave him a pain belt in return. BTW, the lad's mom is still training with me. Hello Mac: I, and many others, used to do that way back in the early 70's, and it worked. I have no idea why we changed something that worked for the present system. We also had a nice show after the event, and that was fun. BTW, Ilona: I forgot to mention that this lad will no doubt beat the butts of most of my students as well, and I could care less. As I said before, winning is but a small part of the learning I hope they will gain from the experience.
