Date: Thu, 09 Aug 2001 00:12:04 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Tournaments/Black belts Hiya all. I went to my first tourny in March. I didn't compete, but I wish I did later. I wanted to see what a tourny was like before competing (having never been to a tourny), and I loved it! I stayed the whole day. I donno if it was because I was new to tournies or what, but I stayed to the very end. Yea, it was a little crazy bouncing around trying to watch everyone, and take pics, but I enjoyed myself for the most part. I did notice that a large number of people did leave before the BB's fights. I thought that kinda sucked. They missed a few really good fights (with members of our dojang and matches with people I never met). Not to bash color belts (cause I am one), but I think the BB's fights are the best part. I stayed to support our dojang's BB's, yes, but I really got into the matches, and watched ALL the schools BB's fight. It was so cool. I thought ya might want to hear a green belt's point of view :o) hee hee Tang Soo! Always with numerous warnings, other sanctions, and all left with any gear they "owned", and none were "stripped" of their rank. >> Yes, but he told this kid to turn in his uniform and his black belt ... this instance none were stripped of rank. How can you take a person's belt that they paid for and a uniform they paid for ... away from them ? I can see banishing them from the dojang ... I have done that in the past to some students to keep quality control here also ... but I didn't strip them of their uniforms or their belts. I have seen student's kicked out of schools to never return and taken off of the roster and never mentioned again in the dojang ... but .... I dunno ... I guess you can do anything you want if you are the master of that school. I never announce any of the winners until the awards presentation. I've also found this teaches younger students patience. Can make for a long day for some though if I have a ton of students in the competition. Overall beginner students seem to like being able to see the advanced belts compete and vice versa. It is a great learning experience. I haven't seen it beyond interdojang though. >> I am holding a small in-house tournament this month for my students ... could you please tell me how you go about holding it off till the end ? That sounds like a good idea for a small tournament. Thank you. Since they are not part and parcel of the test and rank (and fees), it was my choice. I simply gave him a pain belt in return. >> Ahhhhhhh .... Ok ... I understand now Rudy ... I wish I could do that with all the student's that have graced my doors here and then left. Some have used the uniforms as Halloween costumes ! I hear from people that they gave candy out to one of my students ... and I tell them that is impossible as all my student's know that their uniform is not a 'costume' to wear for Halloween. Do any of you make that a requirement if someone leaves the dojang ? To return the uniform ? As I said before, winning is but a small part of the learning I hope they will gain from the experience. >> Yes, I understand ... that girl from our school didn't stay with the arts much longer than a year or so ... so we didn't have our butts beat for too long. We are still with it and she isn't. :-) And I understand why my instructor didn't give her her certificate and belt ... she had been chewing gum in classes since she was a yellow belt. Many a day she would spend outside on the sidewalk doing push-ups with that gum on her nose ... you would have thought that coming to a Black Belt test with gum in her mouth would be the last thing she would do. And that is why he didn't ask her to remove it ... he couldn't believe she was still doing it and doing it on such an occasion. I have a freind who makes these window decals for his own web and JKD design, I think he would help if I ask, you can check out some of his work on his site, www.geocities.com/ghoyd/ and go to decals most of them are of Bruce Lee and the JKD symbol, but im sure if you have the design or maybe he can help, but I'll email him and see what he can do. I was trying to dig up the old tapes. Haven't had a chance to review them yet but I believe that they are copyrighted and the forms as well. As I said, I believe it has to do with the business of maintaining an organization. I don't think it has anything to do with understanding or maintaining the quality of hyungs, ect. I am glad that GM Shin decided to make his books available to anyone. I think that Vol. I has some things in it that are particularly important for any yu dan ja to understand. I also think that he did a good job of presenting the more advanced traditional (: hyungs in Vol IV. <<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>> I'm not positive about this, since I didn't join WTSDA and GM Shin until 1986, but my understanding was that GM Hwang sued against using the name "Tang Soo Do", in WTSDA, not moo duk kwan. I believe the org that GM Shin first founded in the US and that was affilliated with GM Hwang was the US Tang Soo Do Federation or Associaton, can't remember which, but it didn't have moo duk kwan in it either. I have never asked him about it, but I have heard GM Shin say that the court ruled that TSD was a general domain term and could not be copyrighted. You are correct that the only use of moo duk kwan in WTSDA literature and in GM Shin's books are in the historical sections and give GM Hwang credit as founder, as it should.
