However, my neighbors here in the "land of the morning calm" (BTW fish is only 2000 won this morning) are more apt to think of this day as Korean Independence Day. 56 years ago, Japan surrendered to the Allies and began the process of leaving the Korean peninsula after a 35 year occupation. The vast majority of Koreans are doing absolutely nothing to celebrate or commemorate this day. Most stores and many businesses are open. In Seoul, they hold a parade but most people don't know where or when. Some people are using the day for more significant things. Protestors have been running rampant over the past two days. On Monday, 20 men cut off their fingers in protest of Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi's visit to a shrine in honor of Japan's war dead (and some Class A war criminals). They intend to mail these severed digits to Koizumi. On Tuesday, marches prowled the streets and subways of Seoul in protest of the controversial "National Missile Defense" being developed by the American government. Other protests dealt with more mundane problems like the never-ending disputes between labour groups and the "evil employer of the moment." Today is Independence Day in Korea. It is nearly 8:30 am as I type this. My dojang is closed today as is my place of employment. From my window I can see that the local laundromats and beauty parlours are open for business. My neighbor went off to work today but many parents are out in the street yelling with/at their kids. The cicada's never take a day off. I'm beginning to think "morning calm" is a mis-translation. The fish vendor is circling again with his noisy truck and crackling loud-speaker. It's been an hour and the fish is still 2000 won. If you ask nicely he'll fillet it with a rusty breadknife. I guess he can't afford to take a holiday - ever. The US Army is warning all soldiers and civilians to avoid the large demonstrations which are scheduled today for many locations around the peninsula. Even though I'm Canadian I somehow get confused for an American by the locals so I'll have to be careful too. It seems inevitable that there will be violence somewhere today. Odd, for a day marked to remember the coming of peace... Carlos Machado's friend and the promoter of the famous Big D tournament Mr. Walt Mason passed away a few days ago. We are surprised and saddened by his passing. He was a prominent figure in the Texas martial arts community for many years. Mr. Mason was the person who always made the trophies and medals for our tournaments. All the engraving and art-work was in his possession. There was simply no way to find a new awards supplier and manufacture the awards by September 8th. As a result, the 2001 Texas Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Open has been re-scheduled for Saturday, October 6, 2001. Details about the tournament can be found on the Machado Dallas website here: http://www.carlosmachado.com/tournaments/open2001 We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. This tournament will certainly be the best of the year. The competition and level of sportsmanship at this event will be outstanding! We sincerely hope to see you there!
