Ray wrote, > An interesting read... another 'History of Taekwondo'. Recommended... What's up Ray? This article is just another rehashing of older tkd histories -- why do you recommend it? The cite again for people is: http://tkdtutor.com/02-Taekwondo/TKD%20History/01%20Introduction.htm It is a mishmash of several views. It not only reads: "All martial arts began the day the first human had to defend himself/herself against an attack from an animal or one the subsequent humans, so the search for the roots of Taekwondo must begin with the first humans. " but also: "Taekwondo is actually only about fifty years old, and, for a good portion of that time, it was merely an imitation of Japanese Shotokan Karate." This line shows up in other places too. For example, at TAGB (Tae Kwon-Do in Ottery St Mary and Sidmouth in Devon) at the web page: http://www.saunders999.fsnet.co.uk/tkd/pages/hist.html I find: "Taekwondo is actually only about 40 years old, and for a good portion of that time, it was simply an imitation of Shotokan karate." This comment comes from my original online paper about Taekwondo history back in 1990. I know, because I caught a TREMENDOUS amount of flak for it back then. I probably Wouldn't phrase it stridently today. You can still find that old paper at the Universal Taekwon-Do Federation web page at: http://www.utftkd.com/history.htm where they have edited it to read: "Taekwon Do is actually only about 40 years old, and for most of that time, it was simply an imitation of Shotokan karate." Another edited version is at: http://www.kyokushincanada.com/taekwondo/TaeKwondo_History.htm Originally, the article read: "Taekwondo is actually only about 40 years old, and for a good portion of that time, it was simply an imitation of Shotokan karate." Sites where you can find this old history of mine relatively unchanged are: http://www.xinit.demon.co.uk/tkd/tkdhist.html http://ryanshroyer.tripod.com/dakin_burdick.html http://www.durango.com/flexers/history_taekwondo.htm http://www.albuquerque-taekwon-do.com/tkdhist.htm In case anybody is still listing that old history, I would very much advise you to link instead to the latest version (still old -- from 1996) which will be updated as time allows. http://www.indiana.edu/~iutkd/history/tkdhist.html Yours in the arts, Dakin Burdick burdickd@indiana.edu PS: It's pretty interesting to see what has become of that paper. Who would have thought it would still be around! Back in 1996 I wrote everyone who had it up (I thought) and asked them to link to the new version. Now it is linked from Germany, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, and who knows where else! One of my personal Favorites as far as the comments is: http://ww2.netnitco.net/users/jpgtma/forum.htm where the description for my article read, "Beware some odd spellings, but good info." Heh! That was from Jerry Galloway's site, here in Indiana. Too bad the link at that one had rotted, I would have loved to see the comments that description generated! As I looked this up, I also found some good new sites I hadn't seen before. These included: http://hoshinsulonline.tripod.ca/taekwon.htm http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Pressbox/7045/taekwondo/tkdlinks.htm http://handii.com/splash/ThTaeKwanDo.htm http://www.flash.net/~phanes/tk_tkdbookmarks.htm http://pages.prodigy.com/Kenpo/malist.htm http://sportsvl.com/rest/martialarts.htm http://www.hawaii.edu/korea/bibliography/sports.htm http://www.rgstkd.com/links.html http://www.atlantamartialarts.com/styles/taekwondo.htm http://www.phone-soft.com/cyber-world/make-frame.php3?framename=0097i.htm http://winstonstableford.com/ and for hapkido: http://www.geometry.net/Sports/Hapkido.htm ------------------------------ From: Richard Zaruba Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2001 15:16:43 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Re: mountain storm? > From: BTBEACH@aol.com > Date: Tue, 14 Aug 2001 22:38:55 EDT > Subject: the_dojang: mountain storm? > > Is this the tech that was used in the matches? > > Yama Arashi -an animation can be found at - > http://www.judoinfo.com/images/animations/blue/yamaarashi.htm It is close but the "Yama Arashi" or mountain storm throw is different in the fact that a wrist and elbow lock are applied when entering and executing the throw, or so I have been informed and shown. Almost all wrist locks were eliminated in judo training and they are illegal to use in competition. I been told that a recent trend is to add wrist locks back into the techniques to improve their effectiveness.
