Date: Sat, 18 Aug 2001 00:22:18 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Looking for old Black Belt mag Hiya all. I hope you (Ray) don't have a problem with me looking for old magazines here. I'm sorry in advance if it bothers you. Anyway, does anyone have or know where I could find an old issue od BB mag with Grandmaster Ki Yun Yi, Prez of the International Martial Arts Assn based outta Woodbury NJ (Tang Soo Do). He is on the cover, and it came out in the 70's or 80's. I wish I knew more on the year, but I don't :o( If ya would like to know what he looks like, check out the IMA website (www.imahq.net). He is on the main page (and others) wearing a black suit (Korean gentleman, obviously). If I remember correctly, he is on the front cover of the mag wearing the traditional TSD black trim dobahk. I've only seen the mag once in my sa bum nims office, but he doesn't want NO ONE touching it, so I quickly put it back (I saw it while cleaning). I think he hid it after that too lol. If you seen a BB mag with Grandmaster C.S. Kim in it, I'd like to have that one, too, but it's not as important as the one with my grandmaster in it (eventhough I think GM Kim is cool also). Thanks in advance. Tang Soo! Can you give me a rundown on "American Street Karate"? I'm intrigued. Congratulations to Gary!!! >> Craig: The traditionalist, purest, etc will probably flame me and ASK but here goes. American Street Karate (ASK) was founded by Danny Passmore of Waco, Tx for the purpose of certifying his students and instructors. Soon thereafter, some of his peers (me included) asked to be included in using this new name. Danny is a 6th dan in Taekwondo and a 5th in Hapkido. Even though he began as a tkd program, he eventually evolved into teaching no sport and became more of a self defense school. His emphasis was on breakfalls, throws, joint manipulations, weapons, etc so in essence he was no longer teaching taekwondo, but still was not teaching a complete hapkido program. He also stopped teaching any hyungs. Thus he decided he needed to use a name without taekwondo or hapkido in it to more accurately describe his program. I am about 80 % TKD, but also have a separate self defense program (no sport, no forms etc). Tried CH for three years, but not 100% satisfied with that, so converted my street program to American Street Karate. We have several long time quality martial artist who have joined us. Troy Dorsey, a 5th dan, who is the first man to ever hold World championships titles in boxing and kickboxing at the same time. Do you remember his boxing matches with Paez? Billy Wiley, an 8th dan in Hapkido with more than 40 years experience in the arts, Mr. Terry Montang, a collegient wrestling coach and a former member of the army special forces, myself, and a few others. We are a small, but growing very slowly (on purpose) martial arts organization. I am a board member. Also on board is Steve Cardenas of California. You or your kids will remember him as Rocky, the Red Power Ranger. Hope that helps and thanks for ASKing! gary pieratt republic of texas ------------------------------ From: CKCtaekwon@cs.com Date: Sat, 18 Aug 2001 08:47:42 EDT Subject: the_dojang: American Street karate I left off one very important member of American Street Karate. Now everything with my name, address or most importantly, any kind of account or ID number is chopped up into a zillion little chunks before it gets recycled. It comes out like confetti, so it would take a LOT of work to put back together. Paper is one thing, but I think an even greater threat to our fiscal peace of mind comes from the medium which has brought all of us here on the DD together, the dreaded internet. I pay all my bills and also make some purchases online. I haven't had any problems, but I still feel a little squirrelly when I read some horror story about ID fraud. Surf wisely............. LI Ogg On the 28th of July, Professor LI Ogg (YI Ok) passed away in Paris, after a long illness. Born in 1928, he had majored in history at Yonsei University and started teaching there the history of the United States, when, in 1955, he accepted a proposal to teach Korean at the Sorbonne in Paris. He inaugurated the teaching of this language in France and was to spend all his life in our country. Under the direction of Charles Haguenauer, he then turned to the history of the Three Kingdom period, and, more specifically, to that of Koguryo. His dissertation (doctorat d'Etat), Recherche sur l'antiquite coreenne, Ethnie et societe de Koguryo, defended in 1977 and published in 1980 (College de France), has been translated into Korean and went recently through its third amended edition (Kyobo Book Co.). Others, more qualified, could surely tell, better than I can do it myself, why Li Ogg is to be counted among the few who brought fresh air to the study of the origin of the Korean people. Beside his dissertation, he has written, both in French and in Korean, no less than twenty-five scholarly articles on the history of the Three Kingdoms, which would surely deserve to be collected some day in one volume. Few people today know that Li Ogg, at first, had a hard time in France. At the Sorbonne and at the Ecole des Langues orientales (now I.N.A.L.C.O.), in spite of his qualification, he had been kept at a low rank for a long time. He had to wait until 1970 to be made a "maitre-assistant" at the Paris VII University, newly created after the events of May 1968. He founded there a Section of Korean Studies and got his professorship belatedly in 1983. As an historian entrusted with the teaching of language, he worked hard to acquire a sound knowledge of linguistics. For many years, he also held a weekly seminar (called "conference") on the history of ancient Korea both at the 4th (History & Philology) and at the 5th (Religion) sections of the Ecole pratique des hautes etudes (E.P.H.E.). There was a family atmosphere in Li Ogg's lectures and seminars, which often turned to free discussions. He was good at attracting people and, more than anybody else, he is to be credited with the recent rise of a new generation of French Koreanists. Li Ogg has been, in 1976-77, one of the founding fathers of the Association for Korean Studies in Europe (AKSE). During its difficult beginnings, he has been most effective in getting for it the needed financial support from cultural foundations in Korea and influential in keeping a high level of scholarship in its meetings. We, who are to continue his work without him, all feel deeply indebted to him.
