I was completely worn out after the 3 day seminar, so I really got my moneys worth. I saw a lot of old friends and met some new ones. I met martial artists there from Hapkido, Taekwondo, Tangsoodo, and Isshinryu. February will be the next seminar and it is expected to have a large turnout. Be sure to start making plans now, as it should also be a blast and JR West is a great host. Brown: To learn and occasionally lead the warm ups. (no black belts that night) >>3) What were your EXPECTATION at these 3 (white, green & Brown) stages ? White: To do continuos tornado kicks, like a continuos jump spin roundhouse. (That's when one of the senior blackbelts said, hold on there buck...(My name ain't buck) you ain't ready for that. He was right at the time.) Green: To be able to out spar all of the Blackbelts in the school. (That didn't work either, but I could beat a large percentage. Ouch that hurt.....) Brown: To be the best Blackbelt I could be. After all I was doing it for me. I have been training for 15 years and teaching full time for the last 8-9 years. Not as long as some of our other board members. But I do love what I do and I am what I am. A Warrior. P.S. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. BTW, I remember Troy Dorsey from back in the day. That guy was one tough dude. I think I've seen more of his boxing matches than his kickboxing stuff, and it seems like I saw at least one of the Paez matches. Dorsey only had two speeds...stop and go. Once that bell rang I don't think he ever took a step backwards. I thought I would start off with a few questions to the people on this Net. 1) When was the last time you paid $65 for a full weekend of Hapkido training? 2) When was the last time your Hapkido seminar allowed unlimited taping and photos? 3) When was the last time you went to a seminar and realized that there were no "insiders" and "outsiders". 4) When was the last time an 8th Degree Black Belt and head of an international organization checked-in with you to make sure you were getting everything you had hoped for out of your experience? 5) When was the last time you had your choice of a range of classes and lectures on subjects from Cane techniques, to chokes, to kicking, to healing, to the legalities of self-defense and more all taught by 4th and 5th degree Black Belts with years of experience? How many of those classes were double-scheduled so you had more than one opportunity to participate? How many of those instructors let you interrupt their classes with questions at will, take notes or intrude into their mealtime? 6) When was the last time you walked into an 8th degree BB office, plopped down in one of his chairs and was allowed to pick his brain including over 25 years teaching experience? 7) When was the last time that people that you met at a seminar followed-up with you AFTER the seminar and wanted to keep in touch and to continue to share material about Korean Martial Arts and traditions? 8) When was the last time you spent three days focused on Korean martial arts and didn't have to deal with organizations, personalities, recruitment pressure, Attitudes and Egos? Folks, I have to tell you that over the last couple of years I regularly get contacted by individuals who visit my website, and like my mission statement so they contact me looking for resources of one sort or another. Sometimes its to get started in Hapkido (or MA in general). Sometimes its somebody who feels as though they have stalled in their training and don't know where to go next. I do my best to help where I can. That said, I need to share with you that if you are not taking advantage of Master Wests' Summer Seminar, or the Internationale that's held each Spring I think you are really missing the boat. The Greyhound was $95 roundtrip from Chicago. A room at the Red Roof Inn (walking distance to the School) was $38 a night. There was a special package for folks staying at the Hilton (also walking distance to the school) and doubling up on the rooms only would have made things that much cheaper. There is a fella who shuts down his restaurant just to serve-up great food at a great price to the Seminar attendees. So from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon there was opportunities to train and Network with people who had nothing on their minds but Korean MA. Now, I don't belong to M Wests' organization and I don't get compensated for making this little spiel. I just think that I hear an awful lot of whining about how its hard to find decent training and about how many shysters, rip-off artists, and wannabees there are taking people for all they can. What I want you to hear is that twice a year there is a great opportunity to do something truly satisfying for yourself, your school and your training. If you aren't taking advantage of this opportunity for sound training, by well-trained and well motivated individuals at very affordable cost, maybe you need to ask "why".
