Ancient skeletons may only have five toes, but look at Horse's chestnuts and dewclaws on dogs, cats, deer and various quadrupeds...supposedly they were once tootsies too. BTW, Although I know this is a gross over simplification of the Hapkido Vs. Jiujitsu question, one of my Sin Moo Hapkido instructors would say that Hapkido was like grappling standing up (I don;t know if GM Ji would agree) but it's not a bad basic analogy. Because of the way this is marketed and advertised, and the way it has been modified, in my state, it is considered a weapon. I would encourage you to investigate your local ordinances first. I can say, that the one I played with was of excellent workmanship, but was too heavy to be a realistic fighting implement. As far as people downing your attempts to work on your own material... let me pose this question. How many excellent martial artists throughout history have done this very thing? You, know, if we as a people, do not dare to try, then how is it that we can expect to accomplish more and more? I personally encourage my students to try and play with their art, so that the art becomes their own. Then I take what they've come up with, and either tell them this is no good (which is rare) or I help them make it more effective. In this way, the art becomes their art. I have long believed that the art should fit the person, after the person of course learns the theory behind the art, rather than making the person fit the art. And, I am not alone in these thoughts. As the words of John Graden ring out "Why do we cut the ends off the ham?" "tradtion". When in reality the tradtion was set forth because Grandma's stove was too small for such a large ham. Explore your art. Make it yours. Frank PS People who are accomplished martial artists have made up their own material even today to name a few: Ho Sik Pak from the movie "Best of the Best", the Gracie Family, Jhoon Rhee, Ed Sell, Hwang Kee, Ji Han Jae, etc... These great and accomplished masters have done this very thing. There are more, but Ray would kill me if I even thought about putting a complete list here. ------------------------------ From: Piotr Bernat Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2001 19:48:53 +0200 Subject: the_dojang: Re: websites > If any one knows of any web sites that are filled with pics and videos of > teakwondo could you please tell me also could you tell me of any good demo team > sites i thank you in advance for helping my search. The program will continue until the end of the year and is sure to attract a great number of foreign tourists and English-speaking audience who are looking for opportunities to experience the motion picture part of the Korean culture. Admission is free, and the location is one block north of the Lotte Hotel downtown location. The Korean films selected include three romances, "My Heart" (September), "A Love Story" (October) and "Art Museum by the Zoo" (November). The December title is "Seopyeonje" (or A Song of the West). "Joint Security Area," showing this month, is one of the greatest box-office hits in the Korean film history, which depicts a rare friendship developing between South and North Korean soldiers stationed in the Panmunjom joint security area in the middle of Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), which divides the Korean peninsula. The last one in the series, "Seopyeonje," received the highest critical acclaim among the selected. Portraying a family genuinely dedicated to the preservation of Pansori, a classical Korean vocal music, the movie presents a wonderful mixture of artistic and scenic beauties of Korea and the Korean people. Movies are scheduled for every Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. and fourth Saturdays at 2 p.m. ------------------------------ From: "Master Frank Clay" Date: Sat, 25 Aug 2001 18:52:27 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Looking for A Hapkido school Dear List...
