"Side Kicks" class for 4 to 6 year olds. That's only a half hour one day a week thing. Beginners class (white belt, and camo) is 45 minutes long. Intermediate class (yellow, orange, green, & blue belts) is an hour long. Advanced class (brown, purple, red) is an hour long. And black belt class (cho dan bo, and black belts) is an hour long. Then there's the adult class (mixed), which is and hour to an hour and a half long. Each class (except side kicks) has 5 classes a week. The adult class has four. Everyone is required to attend, at least, two classes a week. But there is no limit on classes over that. >> Our Lil' Dragons classes for 3 to 4 year olds are 30 minutes long ... they have 3 classes a week they can attend. Our Children's Classes are 45 minutes each and they can attend up to 2 classes a day (so some come for the 45 and some come for 1 1/2 hours). We have found that the younger kids (from 5 and 6 years old) really only need to attend the one class. The older kids like to stay longer and their attention span is larger, too, so I have no problem with them being there that long. Teen/Adult classes can be anywhere from 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours long ... depending on the day and class they pick to come to. They may also attend 2 classes a day if so desired. But no one is allowed to attend more than 2 classes a day ... the classes get way too full and those that only come for one class need our attention too. It appears that several of the terrorist highjackers had enrolled in martial arts classes at various gyms where they were living. There was an interview with a man who taught jujitsu and what appeared to be an amalgam of other martial arts including boxing at a gym in Florida. He demonstrated some of his stuff and he was very good, it looked like a sort of grappling, NHB street fighting sort of style that also included some moves that looked like Aikido. One of the highjackers on the plane that went down in Pennsylvania had been his student for a significant period of time, Im not sure how long -- maybe nearly a year? The terrorist said that he was a university student and wanted to train for self defense. The instructor, who appeared in very good shape (he looked in his late 40s) said that this was a dedicated and diligent student. The instructor said that often he sees people who are in very good shape but he gets them in the ring and puts some pressure on them and can get them sucking wind, but he could not do this with this terrorist who was in great physical condition. It may be that this is the terrorist who encountered the Judo champion on the plane in Pennsylvania. What a terrible thought that one may have trained a terrorist to be better able to subdue others and to thwart passengers attempts to stop him. I don't think much can be done to prevent this without prejudice, unless martial arts instructors can predict the future. Many martial artists may have felt that their skills would have protected them had they been on that plane, but it appears that the highjackers had some training too. Within six months that split to Age 4&5, and age 6 and Yellow belts. with about 35 kids. When I left my partner went full time and expanded this pee-wee program to three days per week at 4:00 PM i believe and for 30 minutes. The last time I checked (due to the increased time flexability) they were at 75 pee-wees enrolled. Currently I am teaching in a club setting. I decided to offer age 5&6 Mondays for 45 minutes and ages 7-9 Weds for 45 minutes with 10+ being my 1hr 15min family class. I ended up with 5 - 5&6 year olds and 1 - 7 year old, so this September, I restructured to ages 5-7 offered M&W for 45 minutes and familly classes remained the same. I have 5 students in youth and 5 in adult. I feel that the 45 minutes is a decent balance between maximum attention span of a 5 year old, and with twice a week decent progress through the material for the average 7 year old. I have always envisioned something more like Dizzy S's instructor's schedule, but I am still part time..... If you separate ages say 6 and younger that have not completed a full year of shcool (group learning), I would strongly urge you to consider the 30 minute class and lots of games that teach skills. If you jump on the age 4 and under McDojang wagon, plan on spending a lot of time on teaching skills other than martial arts and a possible vocabulary barier....The school age kids I would split by skill level if you have time. Pre-teens actually enjoy being included with the adults, and will usually work hard to be "mature" if "allowed" to attend adult classes so 10 or 12 is a good age to allow into family class... We have Beginners Classes twice a week and General Classes 3 times a week. In addition, we have a 5 hour Open Class on Saturday for the adults. Our children's classes are daily for 4-6 yoa and for 7-14 yoa. The 2 children classes run 45 minutes to one hour several times a day. While the adult classes are much longer, if we try anything longer than 1 hour for the children we run into attention problems. Jere R.
