Dear All In Johnsons Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan we have the following forms to first dan: Basic Form 1 Basic Form 2 Basic Form 3 Pyon Ahn Cho Dan Pyon Ahn Ee Dan Pyon Ahn Sam Dan Pyon Ahn Sa Dan Pyon Ahn O Dan Bassai Naianchi Cho Dan Naianchi Ee Dan Naianchi Sam Dan Sip Soo Chinto Wanduan Jion Bong Form 1 Bong Form 2 Gungan (bong form) Ine (bong form) Knife form Wow! That's 21 forms I think! In fairness, recently we have had some people doing 1st dan only knowing the empty handed forms up to (and including) Chinto - me for example! These are the forms on the curiculum, but we also practice other forms (for fun) such as Pyong Yang and a Matsumura version of Naianchi Cho Dan. The seperate weapons class also does forms with Si, Sword, Tonfa etc. Out of interest, do you guys do the same forms as us? Master Johnson's influences are numerous, so some of these forms will probably come from non-korean martial arts. They will be performed in snychronization with the other testee's (otherwise the testee should be very proficient at push-ups!!). NO made up forms, NO musical forms, NO gaudy do-baks. It is in Itawon area up toward the end of the strip. She has long black hair, black eyes, and probably a bowl of noodles in front of her. Don't order the peanut/dried fish/fruit tray, that is for locals. Send a couple of addresses where your training so I know where to visit next time. Do they still charge for each cup of coffee ? Have they heard of warm me ups ? Tell them that they do that at House of Pancakes. Big Ken __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make a great connection at Yahoo! I pose another poomse question... There is quite a difference between the motor skill ability of an adult and a child. Understanding, of course, that in tournaments age brackets are established... but asking more in a testing and promotion sense... how do the judges and instructors here compensate for the differences in ability of children and adults to accurately, cleanly, purposefully, etc execute the moves of a form. How do you all feel? Is it enough for a 4-year-old white belt to simply know which way to turn and which hands and feet to use in TaeGeuk Il Jang? Or should more be expected? What about, for example, a 10-year-old blue belt? >> hi libby, you might be surprised, but i've actually seen four year olds do their taeguek forms with startling accuracy and skill. some of these kids really know their stuff and have nice snappy kicks and punches and have a great rhythm to their movements. however, if i'm in a ring with some kids who meet the criteria you mentioned above, yes, knowing _something_ of the form is better than nothing. i suppose, though, if a child really doesnt know their forms, i would have to ask why their coach or parent chose to enter them in the forms part of the competition. i certainly wouldnt enter into a swim meet if i didnt know how to swim. giving it the old college try is one thing, but throwing a kid into a public arena when you know they havent learned the material is just plain mean, in my opinion. melinda Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.cjmas.com Toll Free: 1-877-847-4072 Proud Sponsor of the 2001 10th Annual US Open TKD Championships ------------------------------ From: "Wallace, John" Date: Fri, 12 Oct 2001 09:36:17 -0700 Subject: the_dojang: RE: Stabbed Adding insult to injury, they took his money as well ;) - --------- >From: "Rudy Timmerman" >JR Writes: >>> I was about to get stabbed in >>> the belly. >>> >>> Ray Terry >> >> Ray: >> Didn't this sort of thing just happen to you?.....J.R. The 3 beginner forms, Kichi Hyung Il, Ee, and Sam Bu..... from white to orange belts to learn.... Pyang ahn cho, ee, sam, sa, and oi dan forms, for blue, purple, and all of green to learn. Bassai to earn 3rd gup red. Our federation also uses the nianchi forms for red belts through apprentice. In most TSD schools, however, these are taught after 1st Dan. Also, the chilsan forms, there are 6 known in the federation currently, 3 before first dan, three placed between each group of forms (one after kichis, one after pyang ahns, one after nianchis). For a total of 15 before 1st Dan, the equivalent to about 1 1/2 forms per rank to learn, each rank held a minimum of 3 months. She's a 6th gup, but she has 10 years experience (she bounced around a lot cause of the military) in other styles. We were practicing the technique, and I happened to mention that my reaction time is slow. It seemed like when she heard that, she started testing my speed. Not in a "helping" way either. Like she was showing off. It seems like when she finds a weakness of mine, she "preys" on it, and makes me feel terrible. It seems like everytime I work with her, she "brings me down" ..... like "why am I wasting money to be here if I haven't learned anything." I Donna if she realizes that she does it. maybe she is really trying to help, but she goes about it the wrong way. >> Hello Dizzy... Sorry...took a mini DD hiatus...began working from home and, well, I used to think working 9-5 was a grind...now it's more like 9-9, 7-5, 8-7, entire weekend...you get the idea! Don't get discouraged...there is a reason there are so many levels between white to BB. We have all experienced the MA training progress roller-coaster! Just remember that as long as you continue to train, you will never take step backwards. You may very well feel as if you are not progressing at certain points in your training, but you are...PATIENCE and the ability to ENDURE are MUCH GREATER lessons to learn than how to punch someone before they punch you... As for the 10 year 6th gup (by the way ew, wow what an accomplishment-only 10 years?! :0 )...sounds like her EGO is the problem, not your lack of skill. - -Cheree ------------------------------ From: Chereecharmello@aol.com Date: Fri, 12 Oct 2001 15:59:15 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V8 #535 << A while back, someone here said they knew of or had a book on hidden strikes in forms.
