According to the article, It is not their (Martial Arts Instructor) responsibilty to cater to the students personal problems due to the fact that Martial Arts instructor does not have the qualification to assist in such situation. While I find this true, Does this mean that when I student comes forward and say " there's a jerk at work bullying me" "I have a drinking problem", "a relationship problem", "financial problems or even a small problem such as not getting along with co-worker or relative". Should I be whipping out my little Black " Referral" Book and send them on their way ? Althought I have not yet encounter such situation, I would NOT discourage my students to seek professional assistance. Maybe perhaps out of sheer ignorance on my part, or lack of experience thereof, If Martial Arts teaches us the virtues of love, compassion, perserverance, courage, determination, confidence, spiritual, determine and other non-physical attributes..... and as I recall in the Ideals and teaching of the old masters in Taekwondo or other martial arts, part of our training is to imbue and aspire oneself to become a Leader, to develop Courage, A patriot and an Innovator. Is it not our duty to teach our students these virtues ? If not, when did we become a mere P.E Instructor ? So I ask of this list, where does a teacher and student relationship ends ? As always, Thanks for all the great response everyone and have a great weekend!! ------------------------------ From: Charles Richards Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 10:31:44 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: AOL <> melinda, I have been told I have STRONG opinions.... We are having a wonderful expereince training, mainly training at the Hapkido CHundokwan in Seoul, but we also had some training at a Hapkido dojang in a small village in Korea. It is quite a sight to see us all limping back to our hotel in the evenings with bags of ice for various sore body parts. The people at the 7-11 store near our hotel get a kick out of us comming in to buy ice every night. Today we had our black belt test. The test board included several grandmasters and officials of the Korea Hapkido Federation. Master Whalen will post on the specifics as to who was on the testing board and who of his students tested. So, I am proud to add to my Taekwondo third Dan a first Dan in Hapkido. But testing for my black belt was only one of many exiting experiences here. After our test today, Grand Master Yoo had us to his home for a wonderfull supper. There we say a video of a exchange demonstration of Hapkido and Aik ido. Master Yoo has an exchange program where the Japanese Aikido team travels to Seould once a year for an exchange ad get together with the Hapkido black belts and Masters here. It was a a neat video. It is also a thril to see pictures in MAster's Yoo's dojang of him with some of the great masters including Choi Young Sool. The hospitality here from the Grand Masters has been overwhelming. They are taking a very serious interest in our development as Hapkido practitioners. I was touring the DMZ and I saw a soldier whose uniform bore a patch signifying that he was a black belt in Taekwondo. I asked him what Kwan he was from and he said, "what's that?"! I saw another young soldier with the same patch who spoke good english, and he also had no idea what Kwan he was from. He said that only the old masters are concerned with that, for all of the young people comming up in Taekwondo there is only one taekwondo. They have no interest in Kwans. I latter spoke to GrandMaster Won Kill Soo who is a Taekwondo Grandmaster and Hapkido Grand MAster who confirmed this to be true. I think that the implication is that when the older generation of GrandMAster dies and the new generation takes over, there will be no more Kwans in Korea.GrandMaster Won thought that there will still be the Kwans but much reduced in importance.
