We were not required to "counsel" students either. BUT we were encouraged to keep a "little black book" with numbers of a wide range of "help" services in it. I have a good ear, and pretty good with advice, and I put that to good use. 9 times outta 10, every student that talked to me just needed an "ear", someone to listen to them and maybe a bit of advice. But if they needed "more" (for drug/physical abuse, ect) then I would break out the little black book. Most of them returned and thanked me just for caring. Hope this helped. Tang Soo! We had a great test. The testing board consisted of Grand Master Kim, Jae Nam - Head of the KHF examination board; Grand Master Yoo, Chun Hee - Head of the KHF reference committee; Grand Master Won, Kil Soo; and Master Lee, Jung Hee - Chief Instructor of Hapkido Chundo Kwan. We all felt honored to be able to test before such a board of examiners. Also, Master Whalen took many of the falls for his students during their test which is highly unusual for someone of his rank. If ya compare Naihanchi in TSD and Isshin-ryu, they are very similar (except for a few tehcniques here and there), though. It "looks like" they are similar to me anyways. I've been viewing Niahanchi from afar, cause I'm only a 5th gup, so I could be wrong and don't doubt it lol. Thanks for the book suggestions, too. I'll check them out :o) Tang Soo! These are formal and well-defined pattern of attack and counter techniques and when performed with real-time speed, looked like a well-choreographed fight. I have photos sequences of one of the set which I can sent to the dojang digest if anybody is interested. Regards, S. H. Thx. Ray Terry >> I'm not sure how to respond to this query. The forms are like - "all of the above" and more. The Hyung are formal (think of the number of moves in Bassai/Bal Chae) but the students are aware of all consequences if they don't deflect, trap or redirect what is coming at them because there is someone on the other side trying to hit, throw or restrain them. They're going to get dumped or hit if they don't react properly. Pal Ki Kwon is the best example of this combination of punches/blocks, grabs/escapes, strikes/deflections, sweeps/......., etc. Be well, John ------------------------------ From: foxdragon@cuttingedge.net Date: Sun, 21 Oct 2001 07:24:53 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V8 #585 > From: Ray Terry > Date: Sat, 20 Oct 2001 12:45:03 PDT > Subject: the_dojang: Hawaii heads-up > > Just a heads-up. > > Late last night someone you may know, or know of, from Hawaii did a number > of searches on our open archives to see if about thirty different list > subscribers had recently posted to the_dojang. > > Be advised and forewarned... I've passed my 1st dan black belt test. Yeay :) Korea is a beautiful country and I'm so glad I've gotten a chance to spend so much time in the country. Training with Master Whalen's Hapkido masters has been such an incredible experience. Everyone made us feel like family and I think I got to see a side of Korea a "normal" tourist just wouldn't have a chance to see. The training here was a challenge. It seems like everything we did even before we got to Korea was part of a test. There is so much more to training that just kicks and strikes. I've even gotten pretty good with the language. So far my favorite phrase is "Agashi, olmy-o?" or "Lady, how much is this?" We've climbed mountains to buddist temples, ran in circles around the dojang for miles, walked and hiked for hours on mountainous trails. I've mastered the new subway system (put in for the upcoming world cup soccer) and have aquired a taste for kim-chee. And to top it all off, thanks to the color black's natural tendancies to minimize, my new black belt has a certian slimming effect...or perhaps that's due to its corset-like effect...either way, I'll take it. So two more days of training and i'll be coming home... ~maureen. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sun, 21 Oct 2001 8:14:28 PDT Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V8 #586 ******************************** It's a great day for Taekwondo!
