(This came out of a discussion I had many years back when competitive individuals were.... BTW: If it is of any interest there are a couple of names I can drop here (from the SABAKI Net) of individuals who are involved in this sort of research. I would want to clear it with said individuals but I am sure they would love to share much of the work they have been doing. - ------------------------------ Bruce, I would certainly tend to agree with that assertion. One of the early impressions I got from reading Barefoot Zen was that the author felt that the striking and blocking was not only a very low-level way to perform the hyung, but that it was also historically incorrect. He makes a few examples using various moves in Pyung Ahn Oh Dan to show how the traditional blocking applications are impractical compared to the throws and locks. This might have been one of the reasons I ended up putting the book down, since I got the impression that instead of saying "there are several interpretations of all forms which have validity" he was saying "your way sucks. Neener neener neener." :) By all means, cross-post some neat info :) Tang Soo! Tom ------------------------------ From: "J. R. Dear Neal: "....In short, this article exemplifies one of the major dangers of the internet. This can be one cranky guy with an axe to grind. Now, through the power of the internet, he can appear like a whole organization...." Hey, hey! On behalf of the cranky guys in this world I resemble that remark!! Remember, we cranky guys need love, too! Besides, maybe this poor shmoe is just as fed-up trying to deal with angry women in the throes of option-overload as I am. I can imagine that it is not for no small reason that there is a growing population of American males who are seeking relationships among women from other cultures in Russia, Thailand, Phillipines, etc. One guy interviewed for a TV program stated that he had given-up trying to establish a relationship with women in the US stating to the effect, "American women don't seem to know WHAT they want. Whatever they've got just ain't it and they want something else." Maybe women from other cultures have not had the blessings (?) of COSMOPOLITAN, GLAMOUR and MS slathering them in entitlements to which they would like to become accustomed. Oh-oh, gotta go. My female supervisor tells me my wife is on the phone to make weekend plans for my daughter-in-law regarding my grand-daughter. :-) Best Wishes, Bruce ------------------------------ From: Bruce.Sims@med.va.gov Date: Wed, 24 Oct 2001 12:17:00 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: RE: Publishing Stuff Dear Danny: "...I know its hard to say when you have research in progress, but what are your plans for publishing it? I hope you'll let us know if you have articles coming out somewhere, or a book...." After four books my interest in publishing has undergone a shift. I don't look to pump out a lot of verbage regarding some subject unless I think I can make a true contribution to raising the bar where Korean martial traditions are concerned. That said, I also have to own that I have allowed myself to get a bit scattered of late as I work to continue the original DOCHANG JOURNAL project, pursue material on Korean sword and still gather and correlate material on the Chinese influences in the development of Korean martial traditions. I'd like to think that sometime this material will merit a consideration by JAMA, or at least TKD TIMES. I'll let you know if I get close. Thanks for the thought. Just asking, because there are one or two Lau Gar / TKD /TSD schools in my area and I'd like views on either... Lau Gar seems more complete as it has weapons and I think they do some internal aspects as well... Any views would be welcome... Cheers. Rich. ------------------------------ From: "Patrick L" Date: Wed, 24 Oct 2001 14:10:06 -0700 Subject: the_dojang: Pull back? I haven't even pushed yet! Dear Mr. Burick, ME >>When you compare an accidental tragedy with an intentional act, you expose >>your perverted "America Always Wrong" perspective.<< YOU >Perverted? Huh? I think you need to pull back just a little here >Patrick.< Sincerely, thank you for your advice. But this conclusion was not predicated on one comment. I believe my interpretation of his skew on events/history is accurate. As far as your other observations, regarding taking of life, I could not agree more. IMHO even the death of an enemy is a tragedy; that does not mean it is always preventable. I do believe it is possible to be a moral Martial Artist. I also believe it is possible to be a "gentle person" without being a pacifist. How can a person be gentle even though they advocate strong defense? I submit that is the best way to ensure one will have the luxury of being gentle. Dead people never get to discuss the issue of pragmatic morality. >I think it is essential for America to maintain sensitivity to the feelings of others.< I honestly think we do. Empathy is America's greatest strength, and her greatest weakness. Martial Arts is just one example of our willingness to reach out to other cultures.
