What I meant was more of how confusing it can be for others to see your belt and have no idea what level you are. The little guys seem to be the only brave ones to actually walk up and ask :-) I either wear a fairly wide (2.5") plain belt with hangul on one end, or a BB with a red strip running down the length of it (sometimes a blue one with red strips running along the top and bottom of the belt). My point it doesn't look like a 'normal' black belt with rank stripes on it where others can tell what rank one is supposed to be. It just seems that it might be good for marketing purposes or for visitors/interested potential students to maybe put stripes on the belt ... and to avoid confusion at tournaments etc :-) So yes, it would be more for the benefit of others than my own students, who know who I am. I've also had people come in and walk up to talk to my assistant instructor instead of me - thinking I was 'his' student . He is an older gentleman, either wears a BB with 4 stripes on it or a blue belt with red satin trim on top and bottom. ------------------------------ From: "Michael Choi" Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 11:59:05 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Master Whalen et al. trip to Korea BTW: no, unfortunately, I was not at KHF Chundokwan HQ while Master Whalen and his contingent were in Korea. Believe me, I really wished I was there. To test under two of the most senior KHF hapkido grandmasters in Korea, both GM Yu, Chun-hee and GM Kim, Nam-jae. They're both original students of GM Ji, Han-jae. After the Sungmookwan, which GM Ji founded, Chundokwan (est. 1968) is one of the oldest hapkido schools. Back in the 70's when an Aikido demo team visited Korea, they went to the then-KHA office and asked them to recommend a school that they could watch hapkido. They recommended the Chundokwan and its leader, GM Yu. They were so impressed by what they saw in terms of self-defense technique that they called Tokyo, inviting their senior masters. Since then, GM Yu has always had very good relations with Aikido grandmasters. For years, GM Yu exchanged visits between his school and Aikido schools. To this day, Aikido grandmasters send gifts to GM Yu in appreciation. It's highly implausible. One, Taek-kyon Master Song Duk-ki was still alive and teaching Taek-kyon. Two, prior to the adoption of the name Taekwondo, the main gyms (e.g., Chungdokwan, Jidokwan, Moodukkwan) were using names such as Tang-soo-do, Kung-soo-do, Kwon-bup which are the same Chinese characters as Kara-te-do, Kara-te-do, and Kwon-bup (respectively). Three, the founder of Hapkido, Doju Choi, Yong Sool, admittedly studied under Takeda Sensei of the Daito house. Today, although Kukkiwon may not admit it, it is public knowledge that Taekwondo and Hapkido "founders" have training from Japan. It's even on the Korean martial arts magazines (e.g., Mars) and websites. I would rather that modern Korean martial arts style be honest about their roots. If the 2002 World Cup goes well, perhaps this will help a healing process between Korea and Japan. It would help if Japan was more honest about their history (i.e., textbook issue), so that Koreans could be more honest about their own history. With regards to Korean martial arts that are taught overseas, they should acknowledge the influence of Japanese martial arts. Also, for the techniques that are legitimately Korean, proof should be provided. Grandmaster Ji, Han Jae studied Korean techniques under Old Man Lee that look peculiarly similar to the circular kicks that Song Duk-ki taught. A friend of mine who majored in martial arts at Myungji University told me that in the Daito-ryu Aikijujitsu textbook, each technique traces its history as far back as possible. Some techniques site a teacher from the Shilla Kingdom. Or maybe has friends or friend of a friend that teaches it up there? I'm moving there in the spring, and I would really love to stay with TSD/Hapkido. Soo Bahk Do would be my third choice. I looked through all the assn's, clubs, ect websites for TSD and HKD and had no luck. Please help. Thanks in advance. Tang Soo Dizzy> Response: Sorry, wish I could help. George Petrotta (spelling ?) of this list is from Rochester. Kodak is in Rochester, and my uncle "Blackie" is in Rochester. My mom tells me "Blackie" was the Black Sheep of the family (one of 13 brothers and sisters running numbers on the lower East Side of New York City). Blackie spent some time in prison a couple of years back and also worked for Kodak. He always uses the term "I am gonna give him the shive..." and, "He's a real stool pigeon." A real throw back to a by-gone era. Sorry, Rochester is a little too cold for me. Also sorry to ramble. Good luck in your search. Good luck. Sell and Chungdokwan First, I extend my congratulations to Grandmaster Edward B. Sell, one of the handful of Americans who trained in Korea before it was popular. What dedication! He kept on re-enlisting into the US Air Force to continue his training in Taekwondo. He trained from white belt through 4th Dan in Korea! I know Grandmaster Sell by serving as his translator between his mentor, Grandmaster Hae Man Park, when GM Park is in Florida. Both men are very prominent in the Taekwondo Chungdokwan community. Grandmaster Hae Man Park is Vice President of the World Chungdokwan Association, second to President World Chungdokwan Association President Uhm, Woon-Kyu (also KKW VP). Grandmaster Sell is President of the US Chungdokwan Association, a non-partisan, non-sectarian organization. On another note: one day while I was training at Hapkido Chundokwan HQ, unbeknowst to me, Grandmaster Hae Man Park called my teacher, Grandmaster Yu, Chun-hee. GM Park had a student who wanted to learn hapkido. So, he contacted Grandmaster Yu. Grandmaster Park and Grandmaster Yu respect each other greatly. It's interesting that Hapkido Chundokwan is Taekwondo Chungdokwan's reference in regards to Hapkido. I'm not saying that Chundokwan is the only good hapkido school in Korea, but one must doing something right if the head of the oldest, biggest Taekwondo kwan is calling you.
