The Okinawan kata seemed to suggest emphasis on resilience or flexibility, while the Japanese (spec SHOTOKAN) seemed more rigid and mechanical (though the pictures of OS Funakoshi stilled seemed to have that more flexible feel). The Korean execution seemed more rigid or inflexible yet.>>>> I too compared the hyung, the Okinawan version of Naihanchi to the Korean (TSD) version of it. It isn't much difference at all, except maybe a technique or two is different and/or placed in another part of the hyung. But one thing I did notice was the fact that the Korean version is "lower" with the stances. Mainly the horse stance. And the Korean version is more "flowing" (well at least for the IMA), and the Okinawan version is more "stiff". Just my two cents (coming from a rookie lol). Tang Soo! You may not change it/them intentionally, but you will most likely change them unintentionally. Regardless of what your instructor claims, I'd bet you $100 that he has changed them. Perhaps w/o even realizing it. I know he has told you this is not the case, but I would not believe it were I you. Not because I think he is lying to you, but because of human nature, the human body and maturation of your understanding of movement. Yep, worked great! Did you do anything special?> No, nothing special. I downloaded version 7 last week, just the normal install, no customization. My message to the DD just came out plain text. It may have been different if I tried to attach something or add graphics or something else fancy. If version 7 continues to behave I can trash v6 and v5. Thanks also for the NY info. A friend of a friend's girlfriend practices Karate -- she took the Gold in the Maccabi Games in Israel this summer. Could any of you recommend a school in the NYC area? She is from Mexico, visiting him in NY and looking for a place to workout. She didn't say what style -- probably some Olympic type since it was part of organized games. I installed "Korean IME" of the Microsoft web site. This allows me to type hangul as well. Perhaps the website that you were referring to was the Daehan Kumdo Hae's video page: http://www.kumdo.org/kumdo_data/movie/list.asp BTW: KMAN (Korean Martial Arts Network) has a couple of good videos on their website, including a Kum Bbaegi. Since I'm not trained in Kumdo/Gumdo, I don't know what that is, but they have good demos. (Watch out for the other corny videos ;-) Warm regards, Michael Make a difference, help support the relief efforts in the U.S. http://clubs.lycos.com/live/events/september11.asp ------------------------------ From: "Hapkido Self Defense Center" Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 21:54:21 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: korean sword ? I like what Dr. Kimm, He Young told us in Korea two years ago. "The Japanese are known for the sword, the Koreans are known for archery and the Chinese are known for the spear". However, if you go to the 3 kingdom period wing in the museum you will see swords going back to the 3 kingdom period. He called Koreans using a Japanese sword - wae gum or Japanese sword work.... That issued claimed that he received a 7th Dan (I think). Later, they made a correction and said he received 8th Dan (I think). It's been 12 years, so I don't remember it well. Also, I remember reading an article by Scott Shaw where he met with several Koreans including Hee Il Cho and Dr. Un Yong Kim. It's ironic since Hee Il Cho's first book, Man of Contrasts, featured a one-page spread photo of Gen. Choi, Hong-hi. I have seen the Dobbob Gumdo Central Gym website. Interesting how it's totally in English! I guess there looking for foreign blood ;-) Try the following website: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/South_Korea/Recreation_and_Sports/Martial_Arts/ It's a brief directory of Korean websites. There's even a website titled, "Bon-Guk-Gum-Bup" and another titled, "Chosun Sebob." The funny thing about the Chosun Sebob site: the organization is called the Int'l Hae-dong Kumdo Ass'n. I guess it's a competitor for World Hai Dong Gumdo Federation (Andrew Boyd or Andrew Pratt: any input on this?). BTW: what is Dobbob Kumdo? I've seen several Korean sites mentioning this and I don't have any idea what it is. Anybody? About the Kabo reforms, I have no clue. You guys put me to shame. In my undergraduate courses in Korean history, we never touched such specific issues. I'm totally ignorant. Probably Andrew Pratt would be of more help. My area is Hapkido (and even then, I don't claim to be an expert --I'm still only a yudanja).
