I thought that was funny :o) We have a suspended floor in my dojang, and it does "bounce" when ya fall. I donno what's under the wood part, but it's got a lotta "give" to it. The only downside to a suspended floor is if the person next to you is slightly on the heavier side, and you try to do jumping jacks ... when he/she comes down when your going up, and almost hit the ceiling lol. Been there lol. Tang Soo! Which means they CAN hold students. But this doesn't apply to newly opened dojangs. Word of mouth is the best way to go on those. I don't remember that being an "old saying" ... I think that one is pretty recent and being spread around by alot of these martial art consulting companies to encourage schools to market out black belts like they are fast food products ... get them in and get them to black belt ... so the customer is happy. I don't think of the people in my school as customers ... I think of them as my students ... and there is a big difference in the two. And how many black belts they have in a school doesn't tell me how good the school is ... they could be a McDojo and everyone with enough money could be a black belt in there. That isn't how I judge a school. :-) Ms Illona ------------------------------ From: MissIllona@aol.com Date: Sat, 03 Nov 2001 22:28:47 EST Subject: the_dojang: DayCare Centers/Jazzercise In a message dated 11/3/2001 2:29:41 PM Pacific Standard Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: <> Unfortunately, I must agree... to take this one step further, if that is not the case, then we must become either day cares or aerobics studios. Yes, it is sad. I think as a martial arts instructor with a martial arts school you need to make a decision. Are you a martial arts school or a Day Care Center ? Are you a martial arts school or a gym or jazzercise studio ? Believe me ... I get more than enough exercise doing martial art workouts ... I don't need to take a jazzercise class too. But that is just my opinion ... :-) Ms Illona ------------------------------ From: ABurrese@aol.com Date: Sat, 3 Nov 2001 23:10:59 EST Subject: the_dojang: Re: World Championships << May hear more on that once a TKD instructor friend returns from Korea next week. The World Championships are underway at Cheju City right now... Ray Terry >> I know a couple over there right now too. One of my instructors from here in the States and one of his students who has also helped me put on HKD demonstrations. (Hoping to have him in my next video) Sure wish I was over there too..... I bet it's quite an event. There is some confusion in Korea because there are some things being done by Park, and some by Uhm. As far as I know, World Chung Do Kwan is Park, Hae Man's organization while the Chung Do Kwan per se, is the Korea Taekwondo Chung Do Kwan Association. I have seen stone certs from the latter, but other than Ed Sell, no one of any repute has ever mentioned World Chung Do Kwan. Lee, Won Kuk I believe called his organization Korea not World. Sung Duk Song was President of Korea Taekwondo Chung Do Kwan... so unless there has been a rather abrupt name change, the CDK is still Korea Taekwondo Chung Do Kwan. Our TKD lineage is Kim, Jong Song to Uhm, Um Kyu, not Park, Hae Man. Back in 1993, I read the WTF Handbook and I believe that it listed the WTF VP. I'm not sure, but I don't think Grandmaster Uhm's name was though. (Don't quote me ;-) At least that what my card from Grandmaster Uhm said. (Yes, I did meet him at the request of a friend. No, I doubt he remembers me. I'm just a small fry.) Some would argue, "what's the difference between WTF and KKW?" Technically, WTF is in charge of promoting Taekwondo as a sport throughout the world, and Kukkiwon is the institute that governs standards and continual research and development of the martial art/sport Taekwondo. Also, the offices at Kukkiwon appeared to be divided between KKW and WTF (including a WTF Secretariat and KKW Secretariat). I found out the difference when I was visiting a friend at the WTF Secretariat and went into the KKW Secretariat by accident. Still, it doesn't help that the president of both the WTF and KKW is Dr. Un Yong Kim.
