FULBRIGHT FORUM Fulbright in Seoul (the Korean American Educational Commission) is pleased to invite you to attend the Fulbright Forum for November, which will be held on Friday, November 16, 2001, at 6:30 p.m. at the Commission offices in Mapo. This month Dr. Stephen J. Epstein of the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand will present and discuss "Our Nation: A Korean Punk Rock Community," a documentary he co-produced with Timothy R. Tangherlini of UCLA. The documentary provides a close look at the rapidly evolving punk rock scene in South Korea, focusing on "Drug," the club that formed the early core of the movement, along with some of the bands and fans that have helped to make Drug what it is. Stephen Epstein (BA Harvard, PhD UC Berkeley, previous Fulbright Forum presenter) has been teaching since 1994 at Victoria University, where he serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Classics and on the Board of Asian Studies. His interests include Greek and Latin literature; modern Korean literature and society; translating Korean and Indonesian fiction; and, not least, punk rock. We welcome to the November Fulbright Forum all Fulbrighters, senior lecturers and junior researchers, as well as Board Members, Fulbright alumni, Peace Corps alumni, Korean studies scholars, foreign graduate students, punk rockers, and other friends of Korea and members of the Fulbright family. The presentation will be followed by a buffet reception (in lieu of dinner.) We hope many friends will come to enjoy the lecture, the discussion, and the food. Any dojo/dojang I've been to/trained at all had wooden floors and/or some kinda padding. And in everyone of them, shoes were not permitted on the training area. My dojang has a suspended wooden floor (which is great for falls). I'm not putting you or your school down or anything like that. I just find it weird that you can where shoes lol. I wish I could wear socks .... yes, I said socks lol. I get cold feet. But it would make training interesting lol. As far as wrapping your feet, the instructors in my dojang use tape .... the kind they use to give us "stripes" on our belts. I donno if it's because "it's there" or they are just too lazy to look for something else lol. Tang Soo! Prince, Given your use of kumite and dojo I assume this is a seminar at a Japanese style school. ?? You're right in that your standard TKD shoes would probably not be permitted on a Karate-do training floor. But if the seminar is only 2 to 3 hours long, you shouldn't have any foot problems. That really isn't very long at all. However to your question as to taping, if there is a particular place on the foot where you tend to get blisters (big toe, ball of the foot, or heel) you might try to just tape that area. The tape will probably come off after a short while, but by then the seminar won't last much longer and you should be ok. Bassai Kwanku previously Ku Shanku (Kong Song Koon) - Named after the Chinese Military attache who introduced the Kata Empi (Yonbi, Wanshu) - done also by some TKD players as Yonbi Gankaku (Chinto/Jindo) Jutte (Sip Soo) Hangetsu (Seishan) Tekki (Naihanchi/Naifanchi/Naihanji) - three patterns Jion <> Authentic TSD available through their website. Seen it, but affraid the explainations would take me down the road of Hadan Mahki is blocking a low front kick...seen enough of those. If any TSD players on the list would care to give a review?.... I use KJN Shin, Jae Chul's book for the Pyung Ahn's and Bassai, and KJN Lee, K.U.'s book for the advanced stuff except I have a few disagreements. Maybe Master Dunn can compare KJN Shin's Fourth Book on Advanced Hyung to KJN Lee, K.U.'s book. BTW and FWIW your headmaster used to lead many of the blackbelt trainings when he was in KJN Shin's organization so I'd say you have an excellent source of qualified supervision without any books. Lee (and Shin's) book are both excellent resources if you just can't get to sleep because you forgot the transition between move 23 and 24 of your favorite hyung :o) <<<>>> What's the difference between Chung Do Kwan Tang Soo Do and Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan (the one I study)? >> IMHO very little. Chung Do Kwan Tang Soo Do players began to call themselves Taekwondo when about 80-90% joined the ITF or WTF, Most noteable would be KJN Sell. However, there still remain a few CDKTKD players and MDKTKD players that do the Tang Soo Do/Shotokan patterns..... Remeber KJN Hwang Kee started teaching Hwa Soo Do at the Moo Duk Kwan, but it wasn't popular. Eventually he got on the Korean Karate bandwagon, IMVHO becauses that's what the market wanted or was familiar with. With this switch he dropped Hwa Soo Do as a name and picked up Tang Soo Do/Soo Bahk Do. To my limited knowledge Chung Do Kwan TSD schools no longer exist, or if they do, call themselves CDKTKD but do the MDK/TSD forms and not the ITF/WTF sets. <> Moja Kwan is my philosophy of applying Jeet Kune Do concepts to Tang Soo Do. For a hands on view of differences, try our second annual Moo Do Camp in September 2002.
