We only e-mailed each other a few times privately, and then posted on these lists. He always offered his assistance and support. He will be missed. If anyone can tell me more about his passing, please e-mail me privately. Thank You. God Bless to those who were close to him in their time of sorrow. Dan And I trained under Master Choi Han Young in El paso Texas but at different time s while stationed there in the military and he was Mater Choi senior Student of Hapkido Chun-ki-Do ,Which will also suffer because of his passing and I assure will be greatly missed . Dan and I had corresponded for years because of the Chun -ki-Do link and we finally had the chance to meet at J.R West's seminar in MS. last February and he had a great time meeting all on the list as well as my students that attended with me He attended both of my cane seminars and gave me a custom cane that he made for hapkido that I still use in our Dojang and my students cringe at the sight of it. The thing that goes through my mind when we hear about the passing of a fiend is because we are all rapped up in our own little worlds or trying to destroy someone else's, We never stop and relies how short life really is and as Dan Would say "Its harder than a wood peckers lip's". Rogers' friends, family, loved ones, and students; I wish to offer my sincerest condolensces. Although I never had the honor to meet Grm. Rogers in person, through his wise words here and elsewhere, he had shown himself to be a great martial artist. He will truly be missed. Sincerely, Grm. Makes you wonder what the focus of some people's training is all about. Then again, I long for the day when breaking boards, laying on beds of nails, cutting watemelons on people's stomachs, and other assorted tomfoolery are no longer an accepted part of the American martial arts culture. If I have to see one more student suspended between two chairs with a watermelon on their stomach waiting for their idiotic teacher (with blindfold no less) to cut it in half with a katana I'm going to frigging scream. What in the blue hell does any of that frat house crap have to do with martial arts? Nothing! Before I went to bed last night, I "treated" myself to watching a little bit of the ISKA's creative breaking world championships on ESPN2. The whole time I'm thinking, "This is the public face of martial arts. This and Jackie Chan and Tae-bo". Like I said...I long for the day. Dear MDM: "....I'm gonna make the assumption that you've had a negative experience somewhere along the way, yes? From the reading of this, and one other TKD based list, I get the impression that I've stumbled into a fairly political sport - frankly I have no interest in that aspect of it and almost everything you noted in your reply was based on just that. If the first school turns out to be run and populated by unreasonable dickweeds there are probabily other schools although I find it difficult to imagine a dojang full people such as you seem to have described having much longevity...." I was thinking as I read your response that perhaps you had not been keeping up with current events here on the DD Net. I have a pretty good sense of how most practitioners of various KMT would like their traditions to be regarded and their affairs conducted. I have also been associated with KMT/KMA long enough to know that you can drive a truck between what ought to be and what is. When the fella that solicited advice regarding the change of schools gets done banging into the reality of how Korean MT affairs are conducted in real life, I will be very surprised to learn that he and his kids have stuck it out. Thinking back over the last year I have had a good friend swept up in politics with the UTF. I have witnessed slavish adherence to "company-lines" in the face of all intelligent input to the contrary. I have watched as highly regarded personalities bicker or rank, status, titles and cash-flow while sitting by closed-mouth regarding truths about origins, lineage, resources and material. Down closer to the classroom how about the students who recite the Dochang Code about Respect and Ettiquette and then bow off the floor the give their cohorts and parents a raft of grief. The guy running the school won't say anything because he doesn't want to alienate any in-come potential. How about the guys with bad business practices, sexual predators, and sniveling ego-maniacs? Please don't tell me that Mr. Me-&-My-Kids stands a chance in Hell of stumbling onto that one enlightened individual who is going to actually place the good of the art and the students above themselves and their classes or school. Am I angry and bitter? Nope. I am angry and sorely disappointed. My expectations were that individuals who sought to share their culture's traditions with the American society would be better developed and have higher levels of deportment for all of their training and lip-service. What I am finding (quite regularly) is that Americans are seeking to raise the level of KMT as practiced here in the US but by mimic-ing many of the worst traits of their teachers. This is to say that rather than raise the quality of KMT here in the US with the help of the previous generation, we now find ourselves doing it inspite of that previous generation. Thanks for the post. I had gone into ALTA VISTA looking for pictures a while back and came up with a website that showed the basics for men and women and then a series of different robes or coats that could be worn over and which were suggestive of various levels in status. The was a robe for teachers, one for scholars, and one for Civil Service if I remember correctly. I am sure all, or most of these have given way to the Western two and three-pc suit except for special occasions and cultural events. Even so, GM Koo had been considering such a uniform for the upper ranking sword students whose pants were not unlike the large divided skirt of the Japanese traditions (Hakama), which in themselves were borrowed from Chinese tradition. Does anyone know if such garments are available here in the States? Does anyone know if the construction of these garments would be durable enough to survive regular use in training. Inquiring minds would like to know? Has anyone compared the style of these garments to those shown in the MYDBTJ for both mounted officer-types and foot soldiers? Is Bruce ever going to stop asking so many questions? :-) Best Wishes, Bruce ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 8:55:27 PST Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V8 #655 ******************************** It's a great day for Taekwondo!
