Hello All, After reading the posts about nervousness before color belt testing I was just wondering if anyone here has ever failed a Color belt test? (excluding BB testing of course). I will be testing for my Green Belt (7th Gup) this Saturday and realized I have never seen anyone fail a color belt testing. I have attended 2 different Dojangs since I began training, one ITF school and now a WTF school (Due to a move I had to find a new Dojang), and it seems to me that color belt testing is more of a "Showing" then a "Testing". By this I mean you are really showing what you have learned since neither of my instructers has allowed most students to test who wasn't ready to move on in their opinion. Is this the exception, the rule, or a sign that I found 2 McDojang's? Another reason I ask is because there is a Red Belt at my current school who is obviously nowhere near the skill level of the other Red Belts. He shows up regularly for class but just can't seem to do the kicks properly. I find this odd because he is definetly the exception not the rule. I don't know if maybe there is a personal friendship between him and my instructer or some other reason he seems to have been given his ranking. He does know all of his required forms and is able to make his required breaks but he is very "sloppy" in both his forms and techniques. For instance I don't think I've ever seen him properly do a sidekick. They tend to be more of a side stretch kick since he fails to either chamber or rechamber when doing them, he just kind of throws his leg out to the side like he's doing a jumping jack but only using one leg and not jumping. I guess I could be overlooking the obvious reason that he is physically unable to do the kicks correctly. I've also noticed that our instructer tends to match the intensity of training to the individual. For example those who aren't the most physically fit or dedicated aren't pushed as hard as those like myself and a few others who not only train in TKD and Hapkido but also follow a strict weight training and cardio regimin. I call this second group his "Competition" students as we're the ones that he really incourages to fight in tournaments and attend seminars with him. Do I feel I'm at a McDojang? Not really as I don't think I would quit training under him though I do wonder about this one student. But then again I'm only an 8th Gup and therefore question my own ability to judge a McDojang from any other Dojang. Has my Instructer failed in his resposibility to this one individual? Could the problem actually be ME!? Am I being to critical of this one individual? Hmmm,... I will leave this to the discussion of the group. A person could work very hard at the gym or dojang and not notice a change in bodyweight when in actuality they lowered their body fat and gained some muscle. People will get discouraged that they are not losing weight, but actually don't really know what's going on with their body.
