I am a Red Belt and 8.5 months pregnant I can still do most of the falls just fine unless it's to the stomach of course and the throws and rolls are somewhat difficult, but I do my best. Her problem seems to be that simply she can get away with it when the instructor isn't looking. About Failing, I know quite a few people who have failed colored belt test, but so far I have only seen them fail because they didn't break there boards, one failed on Forms. Thanks my opinion. Wish me good fortune, I take my 1st Dan test tomorrow. (Note - there is a Basho (tournement) every other month and they last 15 days of the month) When I was working, I would rush home after school and catch the final matches live. If by chance I missed them, I would watch the highlights later that night on the news. I can remember being away on a weekend visiting some other place and finding a restaurant with a TV at 10:00 so we could watch the highlights. Japanese people thougth it was great that I was interested and knew all the Sumo by name. Unfortunatly, I never got to attend a Basho while I was there live. A good friend of mine did get to go to one. He has third row seats sitting right behind a bunch of the Sumo. He said it was great. Those tickets were very expensive and he was invited as a guest, so he really lucked out. He told us that it was a fun time, and it was really cool to be up close to those giants. Can you tell us a bit more about these [IT band and Psoas] stretches?< Disclaimer: I am not a physical therapist, and I'm poor, so don't bother to sue me if you take my advice and end up permanently crippled, I don't have anything you want. But here goes.... There are a few of each, but first thing to mention is that stretching these areas is not easy. And probably explaining them is even harder. In short, Psoas stretches are designed to pull your thigh back behind you to stretch the muscles that run from your lower abs to probably mid-thigh. And IT band stretches are designed to stretch the faschia (sp?) that runs from your side (under your ribs) to your knee. Both are done much more effectively with a table and a partner. Here are some websites that list some various IT and Psoas stretches: what the IT band is http://physicaltherapy.about.com/library/weekly/aa081501l.htm good IT band stretch pic (remember to keep hips LEVEL, don't shift them!) http://www.rice.edu/~jenky/sports/itband.html more good IT band stretches (partner can help with upper right pictured stretch by gently applying pressure to bottom leg, bringing it farther down if no knee pain exists) http://www.csuchico.edu/phed/atc/Projects/ITband/stretching.html bad quality pics of good team psoas stretches ½ way down (psoas & rectus femoris) http://www.ausport.gov.au/tta/html/354.html the victim would hold one knee tightly to chest while lying at edge of table, the partner would push down gently on extended knee (twords floor)as far as uncomfortably possible, then SLOWLY fold the leg at the knee to bring the foot twords their butt, when it goes as far as is tolerable, the partner GENTLY pushes the knee farther down to the floor. (see the link listed below and picture the woman lying on a table, then folding her knee up twords her butt) good pic of solo psoas stretch http://www.row2k.com/physio/psoas.html about ½ way down, solo piriformis/psoas stretch a little different form the one above http://www.jaxmed.com/massage/pirformis_stretches.htm These aren't the only ones, but they're the best I could find, and they do indeed address the areas. I may try to get a MS Word doc with some illistrations together, if I can find the time, this weekend. If I get it together i will let people know how to get it, if you're interested. I find this odd because he is definetly the exception not > the rule Ability is going to play a large role in this i think, being in much the same situation. I am a yellow belt and received that belt with 3 others who tested at the same time - they are all younger and it better shape than I and as such have progressed faster in their ability to complete certain kicks & movements (jump spinning "anything" is a really good example). There is also an older gentleman (he has to be mid-50's if he's a day) in our group who progresses very slowly because of his age and the physical shape he is in. basically you did not provide enough information for any sort of decision to be made, maybe the reb belt was simply promoted above his/her ability level. > Has my Instructer failed in his resposibility to this > one individual? My 2 cents - only if the instructor has failed to take into account any physical factors such as I mentioned above and/or not exercised patience provided the individual is actually trying. You have all probably heard this story before as I only have a few good stories to tell, but here goes anyway... A few years ago I was getting off a plane in Pittsburgh and made my way down the ramp and out to the concourse. I turned to the right to see if the gate numbers were running up or down. They were running up, I needed to get to a lesser numbered gate, so I quickly made a 180. I found my nose about 4 to 6 inches from the small of someone's back! At 6'1" I am not a tall man, but I seldom encounter someone tall enough for me to only come up that far on them. Plus this back was huge!!! Without moving or looking up, somehow, someway I just knew this was Andre the Giant. (RIP) I looked up and up and up to see the back of his head. His head was huge. His back was huge. Heck, even his little finger was huge! I was completely shocked. Having been around a number of NFL linemen in my day I thought I was comfortable being around larger people, but the size of The Giant was a total and complete shock. Later that day at a different gate I noticed Andre and Big John Studd waiting for a connection. Even Big John looked small next to Andre. Of course, both men are now no longer with us.
