In fact, many martial schools compete with the significant others of their students for time. In order to have a nice balance, it is essential that we make room for the families of our students. This may take some doing and ingenuity, but it is well worth the effort to see that a significant other does not feel out of place at a martial art related gathering. I have a simple rule in our school. Family is first, work/school is second, and I like to see our martial art fit in just after that. This rule has made it imperative that I organize gatherings where significant others are not shut out. For the wives of my male students, this can often be accomplished by some children activities (moms will always be moms and support their kids). In this way, the mom can even learn some about the martial arts and feel part of the group. I have also seen both men and women meet, fall in love with, and perhaps even marry a martial artist only to try and change their new mate shortly after the "hooks" are in place. This has caused many relationships to fail, and it may be a reason why so many martial artists are divorced. There are many people (even on this list) who have successfully made things work out great. I guess we just have to make sure that we are considerate of the feelings on both sides, and that is seldom accomplished by leaving partners at home. Speaking from experience:) Sincerely, Rudy ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sat, 15 Dec 2001 16:15:01 PST Subject: the_dojang: Herb Perez Forwarding...
