What does everyone think they can use for competion (in the ring) that won't work on the street? Olympic style competion has some obvious might-not-try-techniques, but in open competion (aka:you can punch a guy in the nose!), if you can do it against someone equally skilled in the ring, why not do it in actual situations. I have a friend who was very against using any kicks in fights and thought he could just 'take me down'...silly judo/karate boy. He discovered I could kick him in the head from a number of different angles. He has since learned the fine art of TKD kicking, and recently during scenario training, landed a nice axe kick that set up a beautiful throw. Now before one of you gives me a virtual jump spin back kick, I advocate using simple things for fights and like keeping flair to a minimum myself. Any ideas / input? Mark. ------------------------------ From: "Bruce Sims" Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2001 06:27:48 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: Re: Roundkick thanks Dear Gregory: "...., my first post that confused you was because I wasn't very clear, I wrote the post in haste, and should have cleaned it up quite a bit. Sorry, I hope this clears it up a little. I'll try to take more time in the future, but I don't have as much time to write these as I would like.)..." Your first post may have been a rush job, but you MORE than made up for it with this one. Your answer was worth waiting for. Thanks very much for your personal assessment. Good luck on the Re-hab. In regrads to the techniques that are taught in the poomse when compared to the the techniques that are often taught by the instructors to the students there is a severe lack in the technique. I mean How many of us wait to pracatice a spin side kick until 4th Dan (Pyong Won is the first time in the Kukkiwon Forms that a spin side kick is performed). Where are the various techniques that are practiced by us Taekwondoin? Taekwondo forms need to reflect taekwondo technique as it stands now Kukkiwon Poomse does not reflect the wide range of skills that need Formal Practice Routines (Forms). Until any changes are released and announce formally I will wait to hold my judgement about the changes, and how they will effect me. My source indicates that when he studied TKD (pre-1960) they did not have a back-kick, so HKD touching back-kick could not have been derived from TKD. He also states that it was not Chinese influence, but was Taekyon derived. The reported purpose of a hand touching ground back kick is for stability only. In other words if you have bad balance, and you insist on doing back kick - this is the one recommended. No wonder he taught it to me :(. In addition, it is sneaky. Hope this helps, Patrick _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2001 20:44:04 -0800 (PST) Subject: the_dojang: Updated Dan Office Guidelines Forwarding, received from the USTU...
